New Tacoma Owner {2004-1st Gen}

Hi all,

I have recently (3 months ago) purchased a 3.4L 2004 TRD Off Road 4WD Tacoma that had 1 owner and its original 74K miles. The truck is in very, very good condition. It truly is like new. And, I am very happy to be its owner. I've always wanted one, and plan on keeping it forever. Despite the fact that it's an automatic transmission (I prefer manual), but I truly wanted one, and finding one in this type of condition is very, very hard to find. So, I took the plunge into the automatic transmission world. This is my first truck, so pardon if I may ask any dumb questions.
I'm learning.
Anyhow:
I'm replacing all the belts next week, and changing out the differential fluids (rear and front), the transfer case fluid as well as the transmission oil and filter. All Toyota parts. No after market. I've had 1 oil change and use the Castrol SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Oil & a K&N Filter.
I have already purchased all the gear oil, except for the rear differential. I went to Toyota and they don't sell the 80W-90 gear oil. They told me to get the Mobil 1 80W-90 gear oil. I was curious to know whether any of you, who have the 2004 Taco have the experience and could share with me which gear oil for the rear diff is recommended.

I used 79/90 all around no issues or funny noises. But than again I don't have a locker on mine, but I don't think it would make difference.

 

The owner's manual says for the rear diff gl-5 90 weight. I used

$30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 all around, too.

 

Had mine done at the dealership several years ago and they used the 80W-90.

75W-90 for front diff. It's awfully difficult locating the MObil 1 HD 80W-90. Got mine (4qts.) even though 2.8 (3 qts. needed) via Amazon.

 

It doesn't matter. They are exactly the same oil (Viscosity wise

75w-90 is the same as 80w-90 and not far from 10w-30). They changed the rating system since your truck was made. Any bottle still saying 75w-90 is new old stock.

GL4 vs GL5 does matter. Sounds like you're good to go.

 

I would stick with the oem filter, plus it's cheaper. You might want to change the timing belt if it's original also. Congrats on finding a clean low mile truck, it's near impossible the days

 

I'm on the same boat. Picked up a AC TRDOR 120k one with its frame and whole lot of accompanying components replaced. Expecting delivery in the coming Monday.

 

Mobil 1 is very good all around, use it with confidence.
