2018 Tacoma Manual Transmission Surging/Hesitation

OK - I have just over 5K miles on my 2018 Double Cab Sport 4x4 - Manual Transmission. When the truck is cold - second gear - there is a TON of hesitation and surging through out the range during 1/4 throttle acceleration. If I stand on the gas pedal it's fine - extremely light acceleration you can just feel it - but normal acceleration it's HUGE .. One of the Toyota dealers told me " it's NORMAL... That it's not showing any codes " .. If the computer is programmed that way - then it won't throw any codes ".

Has anyone found a fix for this ?

 

The new TSB fixes it but you’re likely going to have a tough time finding a dealer to load it because the documentation for it was poorly written.

Check the giant thread / your local forum in the sub forums here and see if anyone can hook you up with a flash from their personal setup. That’s what I did and it’s night and day different.

 

I have the same issue on my 2018 Sport 6-speed. I had the TSB performed and it was initially a lot better, but after 2500 miles, it reverted back to the way it was. Still hesitates, especially when the engine is not up to temperature. It feels like an old carbureted car when the choke wouldn't close. One of my passengers even commented on it. Embarrassing for a Toyota.

The revised ECU program did did help with the rev-hang "feature" and that seems not to have reverted back. Shifts into 2nd and 3rd are smoother.

 

Did you Flash it yourself ? Any idea what the TSB number is ?

That stinks that it reverted -- It's Not a brand new design - so you would think they wouldn't be introducing more running issues.. I sure won't buy another Toyota if they don't get this fixed.. Like people are saying -- It's doesn't have a CARB -- There is no choke !!

The first post has all the info for updating yourself and has TSB-0058-18 Rev 1 attached. The other TSB-0125-18 is attached in that thread also. They both apply the same software to get you from 04A70 to 04A71.
