Salvage old diesel fuel (heating oil) that has been seating for many years.

My bud has about 100 gallons of heating oil that been his basement for many years.
I want tank that diesel is in and he wants to get rid of the old diesel. Does not look like it has a growth in it, and its probably old school sulfur stuff.

Is there chemical (diesel restorer) that I can use to rejuvenate it?
Plan is to use it in forced air heater:

Honestly I would use Kerosene in the heater, the diesel will work but will smell/smoke a little more - if you are heating a barn then I wouldn't care too much, but something attached to a house I wouldn't bother - just my opinion. I put power service brand? I think that's what it is when I fill my diesel for the tractor. There is also stuff called sludge solve or something similar that will thin it out if need be, I put that in my home heating oil tank right before a fill up and it has helped out. I get it at Home Depot. Possibly find someone with an old 7.3 power stroke or 6.2 chevy diesel or older diesel farm equipment and do some horse trading as I think they love that older fuel.

If it is dyed diesel the dye in your space heater will run you out of the shop your eyes will water your throat burns.

If you don`t mind that by all means fire it up

 

So I tested it in the garage and it burns good.
You right about eyes burning, but it's only when you right upon heater exhaust.

All that talk that fuel goes bad, but this stuff is like 20 years old and it burns.

Let's see if it's clogs up the heater.

Diesel and Kerosene are a lot more stable than Gasoline, especially the older stuff from before the Ultra-low sulphur era.

 

It probably helps immensely that it was stored in a basement and not outside. Make sure you have some good ventilation wherever you're using the heater. And when you're offloading it from your friend's tank, pull off the top as much as possible to avoid phase separated water and sludge at the bottom.

#2 is very stable, which is why it persists in people's underground tanks even after they switch to another heating source. Tanks finally develop a leak and rainwater/groundwater displaces the fuel into their's and their neighbors' backyards. Messy and stinky. Glad you found a good use for it.

You can try it if the heater is rated for indoor use. I would buy some CO and CO2 detectors if I were you. They're relatively inexpebsive.. Also make sure the wick is fresh and installed and aligned correctly or you won't get a good hot burn to get rid of the fumes from unburned hydrocarbons.
