I got my T3i body only and bought a 18-200mm lens for it. Also got a 50mm and I think I've used the 50 a handful of times. It does make it easy if you're only trying to snap a quick shot and don't want to futz with zoom and all that and the f1.8 I got is nice. T3i model is 8 years old now but still a very good shooter.

You got a smokin deal if you only paid $500 for it with a kit lens. I paid $550 body only and another $550 for the 18-200mm.

Oh wow. Yeah we bought the kit from Target, also came with the camera bag. One thing I’ve learned about lenses is it all depends on what you’re wanting to capture. Lol. I like depth of field so my 50mm f1.4 makes it super easy to capture.

Its also the glass the stock lenses are ok for everyday family use but if you want better photos getting better glass helps a lot. I'm running a 28-105 f4.0L and a 17-40 F4.0L I'm still shooting with a 5Dmk1

 

I bought it in 2013, so maybe the price hadn't gone down yet since it was still relatively new.

I like the narrow depth as well, makes your target really pop!


@EricL you definitely get better products by piecing your own parts together, kit lenses aren't typically very good quality. They lack good glass and sturdy components for auto focus but they aren't terrible. You really get what you pay for in cameras but honestly the expense to quality ratio really takes off the higher you go. You pay a ton more for parts that are only marginally better. I think any highly rated DSLR even an entry level will be way better than your phone in terms of quality of pictures. Just a matter of weeding through the options.

I haven't looked at cameras in years and my little T3i is getting very antiquated in terms of features.

You're on the right track looking for a DSLR instead of a point and shoot. DSLR will last you much longer before you feel the need to upgrade, and new lenses will really broaden its uses compared to being stuck with whatever the point and shoot comes with.

BTW, I have a 32GB card in mine, I've had thousands of full quality pictures and never come close to filling it. Card write speed is most important especially if you're trying to capture moving objects with burst shots.

 

When I saw that the new t6i has Bluetooth and transfers photos to your phone I instantly wanted to sell my t3i haha. I hate hooking the cable up to the computer just to get my pics.

 

The last camera I got has that. Super fast and easy transfer. its just a point n shoot canon I think. Y'all are talking greek to me up in here with the DSLR talk

 

Yea I'd say that wifi and/or bluetooth are pretty essential on cameras now. For the amount that I use my camera though, I am happy with putting them straight on the computer.

Another option is a card reader with phone adapter. I have used that plenty of times with Android, IDK if iPhone supports that.

 

I end up shooting in raw 95% of the time so I have to "develop" all of my photos on the computer. I have an external USB card reader. Also having good fast memory cards helps a lot when taking a number of photos.

 

I did that for a while at first, but I don't have a good photo editor on the PC so I just switched to regular full quality photos. I don't do much post processing. You have any good cheap/free suggestions for software?

 

I've been really happy with Raw Therapy its a free editor with a lot of controls. I'm still learning it as I've just gotten back into shooting again.
