    Hey guys,

I spent the day yesterday doing odds & ends to the new '03 Tacoma, and part of that was replacing the instrument cluster bulbs. As it turns out, I did not have the correct bulb in inventory for the HVAC controls, so I have to do those on round 2.

Additionally, I suspect there are numerous other controls that should be illuminated (there are in my '96 4Runner, anyway) - but I couldn't find a comprehensive list of bulbs and bulb placements searching through the TW threads.

I'd like to take care of EVERYTHING on the next round, so I'm researching the bulb types and quantities (incandescent) so as to not need a round 3.

I did find the following in another post, but I've amended it to include switches that I suspect should also be illuminated - can you guys confirm and/or amend this list?

    1. Low Beam Headlight Bulb Size: 9003/HB2
    2. High Beam Headlight Bulb Size: 9003/HB2
    3. Parking Light Bulb Size: 168 or 4157NALL
    4. Front Turn Signal Bulb Size: 4157NALL
    5. Rear Turn Signal Bulb Size: 1156
    6. Tail Light Bulb Size: 1157
    7. Stop Light Bulb Size: 1157
    8. High Mount Stop Light Bulb Size: 168
    9. License Plate Bulb Size: 194
    10. Back Up Light Bulb Size: 921
    11. Front Sidemarker Bulb Size: 168
    12. Dome Light Bulb Size: DE3175 or 10W
    13. Step/Courtesy Light Bulb Size: DE3021 or DE3022
    14. Ashtray/Glove Box Bulb Size: 74
    15. Instrument Cluster Bulb Size (x4): 168/194
    16. HVAC Bulb Size (x3):
    17. (99) AC Button Bulb Size (x1): 88607-16010 - White base - 14V 0.065A
    18. (99) Hazard Switch/Diff Lock Switch Bulb Size (x2): 84999-10320 - Grey base - 14V 0.84W
    19. ECT Switch?
    20. (99) Passenger Air Bag Switch Bulb Size (x1): 90072-02005 - Brown base - 14V 1.12W
    21. anything I'm missing?

    Ashtray and glovebox are 74

The hvac bulb are dealer only, it's a bulb built in with socket if you have the 3 bulb system.

    Cluster bulb are 168/194

HVAC on my '99 are 2 # 74 mini bulbs. Most of the dash warning lights are also #74 mini bulbs except the low fuel warning which was slightly larger but a 74 still fit.

Dealer only is crap. Those are the #74 mini bulbs and they pull out of that "built in" socket.

    Pre-01 hvac bulb are different

Not on the 3 bulb system (01-04). Bulb is completely different. 74 are way too tall and the oe bulb have a flat bottom, no way a 74 will fit.

I tried on my 02, you?

I know the bulb itself is not replaceable on the 3 bulb system (01-04). The bulb will not pull out. Power / connection pronge from the bulb is fed through the socket and wrapped around the socket.

Op vehicle is a 96, so maybe on that part you're correct. Might be replaceable with bulb, but that's not the case on 01-04

So they can be replaced, just not as easily. And if the 01-04 are anything like my '99, then getting the HVAC controls out to do that swap is a pain in the ass.

Correct, if you plan on changing the bulb color it's doable. 01-04 bulb is also located inside the panel as well like pre-01, have to be patience and careful when prying the housing apart.

But if you want to retain the factory color like me, you won't be able to find a replacement bulb beside the stealership or maybe wrecking yard. But bulb was just 9 buck otb and I rather go new and not have to worry about it for another decade or so.

Yeah, I got #74 LED bulbs for mine. The heater controls only have 2 bulbs that you can pull out. I used needle nose pliers to pull them, just don't squeeze too hard or you'll break the glass bulb.

I believe they should be 74's. The important thing though is that the bulb needs to stay incandescent. If you convert it to LED it will always be on.
