I have the 7900 and it's a good radio. I wish I had gotten the 8900 though, just for the dual band features. I can fit the 7900 in the pen slot of the center console, but I'm not sure the 8900 would fit because the bottom of the face plate curves out a little bit. In all honesty, I'm prob gonna spring for a Kenwood 710 next, but its lot down on the list.

Tape/Velcro what to what? The faceplate to the mount? It's made to attach with screws or something, maybe I'm missing the point. I'm weary of any tape/velcro in the TN heat.

Probably just all the adhesive build up cumulatively holds finally.

True. So probably will just need a suction cup with a universal vise style mount eh?

I've owned an earlier model of the Yaesu FT-2980, simple to setup. Speaker is out of the bottom I believe. I did have a technical problem after 1.5 years, with it powering up correctly, that I was able to repair myself with a replacement transistor. The schematic came with the manual, and that was helpful. sold it, as it was not going to fit into my current truck neatly, and it is still working in a fellow operator's truck. Advantage of the Kenwood will be the speaker out the front. Icom unit maybe the most compact. Can't go wrong with any of them. Key to best performance is in quality of installation, especially the antenna.

 That is considerable force to pull those lines out like that. all that extended rope is not lightweight.

Comparing size of 20m vertical SOTA antennas. MKI vs MKII. If interested look up AJ4ADN on QRZ. He is at most South East hamfest.

Finally read the entire thread (Thanks to a few slow days at work!) so now I feel equipped to ask a few more questions. I think I've settled on the V71a (unless someone wants to try to talk me out of it)

    TM-V71A Users:

    1. Are you using an external speaker?
      1. If so:
        1. What model?
        2. Where is it mounted?
      2. If not:
        1. Where is your radio mounted?
        2. Is the speaker facing up or down?
      3. Are you using 1 or 2 speakers?
        1. If 1, how did you combine the spk1 and spk2 outputs?
        2. If 2, where are they both mounted? And do you think this is an advantage to 1 speaker?
    2. How long is the supplied mic cable?
      1. I'm thinking about mounting the radio body under the driver's seat. Will the mic cable be long enough to set near the E-brake and be long enough for me to speak into comfortably?
    3. If you separated the body from the face, did you use Kenwood cabling for it? Or did you use regular Cat5/6. I've read if you don't use KWood's cables there could be lots of noise in your signal, but the Kwood brand is really expensive.
