What does that mean?

I could swap them between my two cars and try it I guess....but I'd need to figure out how to take that switch out without screwing up clips and making it rattle afterwards. I'll make you a deal, you take yours apart and film it to show me how to do it and I'll do the swap to see if they are interchangeable

 

CAN is pretty much a network in the electrical system. The functions talk to the computer, the computer decides what to do such as if its ground controlled circuit then open or close the ground. The network making all this happen is called the CAN. You may have have also heard it called the CAN/BUS system.
Basically it means you can swap the switches, but unless you are able to program the ECM/network its pointless.

 

Is that something that can be done with techstream or is it more complicated?

One thing I notice different about rolling up the highlander windows is that they are 'soft close' like your kitchen cabinets are...not sure if that's a switch/motor function or more along the lines of the programming.

 

Network wiring through the ECM. The ECM has to be able to recieve and command auto up/down. A switch swap does not give the ECM that ability.

My 4 runner says the same.

Wish Toyota did not change it to say "all auto" I miss the "FULL AUTO"

 

Well, sorry OP....I did like the idea though of all 4 windows being auto. I guess we’re stuck holding the button for a full 5 seconds.

I really don’t think the switches will work as I mentioned earlier in the thread, just swapping switches didn’t work for the 4Runner. I’d expect almost 15 years later there is even more chance this would be computer controlled over just switch controlled.

 

I don’t think you need to swap out the switch. You should be able to enable this either by using the entune system or by changing a setting using the Carista app. I know I’ve seen the option to change the function of the switches, just don’t remember where.

 

I had a 2003 Altima, and you could roll the front windows down or up using the remote entry fob.

That was kick ass.

 

This is the weird part, if you push down the switch that's an automatic window you fell a double click/push needed to initiate the auto window. On one that's not an auto there is no double click and the window just goes until you let your finger up. This tells me that the double push controls the window going down. Might just have to get the switches. Just a thought

 

Yeah that’s what I thought about the 4Runner, same thing that double push switch, but still didn’t work. Can’t guarantee it won’t for the Taco, but I know wiring in a DEI module will, so that’s where I’d spend my money.

Doesn't this mean that an auto switch would be capable of sending 4 different signals to the ECU (auto up, auto down, up, down)? That sounds really complicated/expensive compared to just adding a switch that actually opens/closes the circuit itself.

What if you had a switch that had a circuit built in that would keep sending the "down" or "up" signal to the ECU? Would that be able to trick our Tacomas computer?

 

Idk about adding them but you can change window settings with techstream. I hate auto windows and was able to completely disable the auto up and down in a few clicks.

 

It's interesting that different people say they have different setups among 16 through 18. I have had at 2019 for 2 months now and both fronts go up and down automatically. I do have the tech package so maybe that makes the difference?

 

Just for reference i have a 2016 double cab SR5 and only the drivers window is auto down but not up.

 

My 16 SR5 had drivers side and my 17 TRDOR has both front. So my theory has been its SR/SR5 vs. TRD/Limited thing.

 

I'm not sure if this thread link will help, but I was planning on getting around to it when I had my '15. I'm still wondering if it could be applied to my '18 for the rear windows.
