Though about starting a thread on Scotch till I seen this one. It's been 3 years since the last post.
    Revival anyone?
I've been drinking Jameson for years. But recently I just started trying new Whiskeys, trying to go for bang for your buck quality over what's popular. Staying away from Jim & Jack, Crown etc. as I have never been impressed. No offense to any one who drinks them. Just not to my liking.
Bought a bottle or 3 of
    Eagle Rare
    Woodford Reserve
    Bullet
    Monkey Shoulder
    JW Black
    Macallan 12 year
    Glenlevit 12 year.
I haven't opened the Macallan yet. But the Monkey Shoulder for a Blended Scotch is super tasty. Glenlevit 12 good, but Monkey Shoulder my opinion better.
JW and Woodford's nothing to brag about. Bullet quite good and so was the Eagle Rare. I am trying to get my hands on a bottle of Buffalo Trace but it's hard to do in my area.
Sorta settling in on Scotch over Bourbon.
What are you guys drinking 3 years later? Suggestions for Scotch for a newbie under $100/bottle? Brands that are easily found at the local liquor store?

There is a thread here all about whisk(e)y:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/favorite-whiskey.193280/

    Come on over!

As for sub-$100 scotches, go see what sort of Compass Box selection your local liquor store has. I recommend their stuff to folks all the time as I'm a HUGE fan.

The Great King's Street blends are around $40 and really nice. Then you start moving up to Oak Cross, Spice Tree, Peat Monster, Hedonism, The Spaniard, Delilah's XXV, etc., etc. etc.

The mastermind behind Compass Box, John Glaser, is an American that is rocking the scotch boat. He's a badass. Look up their stuff and grab you a bottle!

Never heard of Compass Box. I'll look it up next time I'm at the local candy store.

This guy consumed way to much of my life a couple of years ago as I meandered through the world of scotch, Irish whisky and bourbon. He is one of the top tasters around and I love that he pushes finding more affordable options. He's also highly entertaining.

Of the ones you listed Eagle Rare is one of my favorites, a little cheaper and just as good in my opinion is Buffalo Trace. For cheap scotch I prefer Glenfiddich, Laphroaig is my favorite mid-range.

From my understanding and research Eagle Rare is Buffalo Trace just aged longer. God help us trying to find a bottle of Buffalo Trace here in Central North Carolina. Not happening. On my 3rd Liquor store search the clerk suggested Eagle Rare saying it was BT only aged longer and from my research it seems he was correct.

That's good to know, I enjoy them both.

I love scotch/whiskey, and have had my fair share of prime label. Much to my surprise though, I was sitting at a "hosted" hotel bar and asked for scotch rocks. I had absolutely no idea which brand it was, as it was "free," I wasn't expecting much. I was shocked as it was one of the best I had ever had (even when compared with $100 bottles). So smokey and good, but dirt cheap; like plastic bottle dirt cheap: http://www.clanmacgregorwhisky.com/en/

I am working my way through single malts from various regions of Scotland, but so far, I have learned that I really like the Islay region (very peatty). My favorites so far are Laphroaig and Lagavulin. I have a bottle of Talisker that I haven't opened just yet. I have also had Old Pulteney (very nice) and a bottle of Glenkinchie (very good, very light on the palate, almost the opposite of the Laphroaig and Lagavulin).

Almost forgot - my in-laws gave me a bottle of Macallan 12 for Christmas last month.

I only have a drink maybe a couple times a month, so it takes me a while to get through a bottle :D
