Replaced blower motor and resistor, same problem

About a year ago my 2013 Tacoma's blower motor suddenly worked only on high.
After searching this forum, I got the new connector and resistor and it worked perfectly.
For about a year.
At first it was intermittent then only high speed.
The parts store guy told me that it's likely the blower fan failing which is causing it to burn up resistors and I should replace both.
This was corroborated by my son in law , a mechanic, who I had replace the parts.
problem solved, for about a week, and the same thing happened.
He thought maybe a loose connection, took it apart, put some grease on the connector, and it worked fine.
for another week.
Now it's doing the same thing , he thought maybe a defective resistor, got a new one but this time it didn't fix it.
Any ideas?
maybe the dash switch?

 

OP, can you take a pic of the connector at the resistor and post it? Take the two halves apart. I would like to see if there are signs of over heating the terminals. The thing is the terminals in connector have been known to have weak spring force against one another and that ramps up the resistance, gets hot and the terminals make poor contact.

 

I’ve replaced my connector and pins twice, but never the resistor. IIRC when mine would burn up, the female pins would sort of widen and not make full contact. First one lasted about 3 years, second one has a year on it.

Edit: I could wiggle the plug and all speeds would work, which told me it wasn’t making good contact.

 

Did you replace or check the two pin connector that attaches to the motor?

I looked at the connector for the blower and it is tight and has no signs of being burnt.
Any ideas what to check next?

On my ‘05 I replaced the resistor and the problem came back. I eventually disassembled the connector and slid the spade connectors right into place and pinched them. They were perfect ever after. The connectors get shitty and loose and that was the problem with mine. It doesn’t matter how tight the plastic of the connector is right now. The heat can help cause oxide build up on the actual spade part.

They are in an area which is subject to getting kicked by passengers who are rarely as careful with your super cool truck as you are.

Similar problem here, just today the blower stopped working completely on all speeds. I pulled the two connectors in the photo below and there was no burning or damage as I have seen in other threads. The vehicle is a 2008 Tacoma. What should I be checking next?

 

The motor comes out easley you might want to see if it actually turns easily by hand. Once it's out probe the two terminals with a voltmeter see if you have voltage there with the fan switch on. About a month ago I had to remove the motor in my 2011 because it squealed like a pig from dry bushings left alone it probably would have seized. If it turns hard likely as not It won't work on low speeds the only thing that will happen is the resistors will get hot and there is a good chance they are all ready cooked.

 

The motors do get cooked by the shitty resistor connectors. I did replace my blower motor as well early in but the problems didn’t stop until I got rid of the connector and effectively hard wired it. The motors are not expensive from the dealer and are easy to install.

On a non op fan first check should be fuses.

 

OK, I put a voltmeter on the plug for the motor and I'm getting voltage there when I'm on various fan speeds. So I assume the motor is dead. I see many choices for a replacement, all the way from $29 (Rock Auto) to $125 (Amazon OEM). Any recommendations?

 

Rock Auto is strictly online and you can not call them, not even their customer service. Not a big deal unless you have to return something.

 

It's usually the resistor, they go out all the time.

 

Please verify that you do not have water leaking into the blower housing via the cabin air filter. You may replace the motor only to have it fail again.

 

The blower motor? All 3 dealers around me sell them for $200! I got mine on amazin for $135.
Neither are cheap...haha.

 

I would still count $200 and a couple of beers with of labour as a cheap fix. Lots more expensive stuff that you can break.

 

Not for how often they seem to fail. Though thankfully the 44 revision has a bolt so I can take her apart to oil the crappy bearing.

If anyone has a squeky one try to oil it if you can!
