And it's also a good idea to have a buddy with another vehicle just in case.

    No additional gear is foolproof

Were you in 4 high or 4 low?

If you were in 4low, thinking that may help get you unstuck, your TRAC would be deactivated and you would essentially have open diffs (2 wheel drive: 1 front and 1 back)

Better traction in 4high because of TRAC, but harder to manage it. Do the yellow wire mod if it's applicable for the 3rd gens.

Tires tires tires. If you're out there with the stock tires you're asking to get stuck.

I had a 1980 K20 that had 37" tires, was lifted 10" and was pushing close to 500 horsepower from a 454. I got that thing stuck worse than anything else I've ever had in a place I never suspected. Sometimes you just get stuck. It took a farm tractor to pull that beast out.

Next time try the same way traction control works. Turn tires extremely slow and let the sand fall and fill around the tire. If that doesn't work for you jamb your floor mats in front of the tires.

I was stuck but Not stuck, tires were not deep in sand , the 4x4 just stopped working on my 2018 Tacoma TRD sport- ! i got a message on the display "hot Fluid" then a guy came by with his Tundra ( Military guy) Thank God and told me my lockers are out of wack??? this while the Shark tow truck circled around - so he told me that would pull me a few feet and then to put it on drive and should work and it did ! so WTF happened there? took it to service and they could not find anything wrong, so why the 4x4 stopped working? I drove about 200 feet on the heavy sand at Carolina beach and stopped! engine was running but truck was in gear with 4x4 engaged and tires would not spin! this is my second Tacoma I had a 2016 and never a problem!

Sorry, I still don't understand why people buy the Sport over the Off-Road. Your getting more for virtually the same price, and a smoother ride. Crawl Control is a beaut!

This is not at all advertised but the best we can tell, 3rd gens have TRAC active in 4Lo in SR/SR5/Limited/Sport trims. (in OR and Pro trim, in 4Lo, defaults to TRAC off, you have to turn on MTS or A-TRAC to get traction control in 4Lo for these trims)
So no need for yellow wire for 3rd gens
