Does anybody know what specific grades of steel Toyota uses in the 3rd gen Tacoma frames. I know what the approximate strengths are, but I need the specific grades.
The types of steel would also be helpful (specific grades would be better though). For example, if a specific section of the frame is made form TRIP steel, knowing the section would be useful.

About the only way you might find out is contact Toyota USA and see if they can put you onto someone in the Engineering department that has these specs

Another way if that does not work out is take samples have them sent out to metals testing lab .

In the past I have needed to do this when having problems it takes time and is not cheap

Local College with strong engineering program might enjoy the challenge

I'm going for a graduate metallurgy degree, and I was hoping I wouldn't have to run the tests myself lol!

there are portable xrf instruments. They identify alloys quickly and with nearly the same results eds will give you eception for the lighter elements.

I'd like to see someone build after market frames. That are less prone to rust.

If you have to do it yourself, XRF (X-ray Fluorescence)is the method to use. EDS (Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy) only gives you approximate quantitative results. With that said, If I were you, I would try my best to get in touch with someone at Toyota. You might have to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to be able to get the information, but corporations like to help out the education system.

The project ended up not going through, the department didn't want to wait for characterization.

Although his project died on the vine, is this a tidbit you have access to share?

Don't suppose you know the alloy compositions?

I have nothing related to composition either. This is all I've got.
