Alright, so I ordered new rims from Discount Tire for my 2006 Tacoma. Got them installed Thursday and they look great (pic below) but of course something is bound to go wrong. First off, they had just finished and I was leaving the stores parking lot until I heard a hissing sound from the front driver tire. The rim was installed a tad off so they were quick to get it fixed when I took it back. But the low tire pressure light came on and they said one of my TPMS batteries was bad. They fixed the battery and the light was still on but the air pressure was all good, so I didn't worry about it. The TPMS light stayed on all day Friday but the tires looked fine upon my inspection. Come today, I checked all the tires pressure and found that 3 were at 35PSI and the driver rear was at 25PSI. So I took it in the Discount Tire store and the guy aired the tired back up to 35PSI and had no clue why it lost air. And the low tire pressure light is still on. So I figured and will monitor it the next few days and if it loses air again, looks like I will be heading back to Discount Tire. Needless to say, I'm frustrated. Any input?

Also, how do you reset the TPMS? I have tried but nothing seems to work. Is the TPMS system really worth it?

Is the light blinking or constant? Does your spare have a sensor and if so have you checked it to see if it's low?

There is a reset button under the steering wheel.

Just constant not blinking. I think the spare might have one, I'll check. And I have tried using the reset button under the wheel but it doesn't seem to do anything.

If the light is not flashing just clear it using the button and keep an eye on the right rear tire

if it really bugs you, set to tire pressure to like 28, reset the threshold, then put it back up to 35. spray soapy water around all the valve stems as the fit kits tend to leak on our wheels.

Check the spare’s pressure. It may have a monitor

A low tire is nothing to get frustrated about...
air it up, push the button and move on. If the light comes back on, inspect for a leak. No reason to get pissed at the low paid tire jockeys at discount. I’ve installed new tires before and had people come back the next day with a nail in it. Shit happens.

With the key on, just hold it down. The light should flash several times and go out

I'm having a similar problem with my 2011. I needed new tires on a 2014 I had and I put a matching spare and tire under the truck. Had to add a new sensor which was an aftermarket from NAPA. I've done business with the same mechanic shop for 30 years, so I trust them. 5 new tires, 1 new wheel, and 1 new sensor. Then about a month ago, I found this 2011 I really liked. Took all 5 new wheels and tires from the '14 and put them on the '11. Now the light flashes on start and then goes solid. Rechecked all tire pressures, and set them the same. Tried to reset TPMS light to no avail. Talked to dealership where I purchased. They told me to find the problem, they have to inflate and then deflate each tire to find the faulty gauge. Then remove the tire to program the tire into the ECU. Approximately $300.00. My mechanic told me they would have to pull each tire and reset each sensor to the new truck. $300.00. Toyota's will not automatically reset. It has to be done manually. My mechanic did it for the '14, but I replaced it, so I'm starting over. Also, my experience over the years is that aluminum wheels can be tricky, so if the installer of the tires isn't real careful you can have problems with them holding air.
Sounds like two potential problems. One; tires weren't mounted exactly correctly, and two; monitors weren't programed to the truck. Maybe an inexperienced installer? Call a dealer and pick their brain for more information, or try another tire shop. The more you know, the better position you are in. As for me, I'm going back to my mechanic to get this fixed because his explanation made more sense to me. Hope this helps.

Update: Alright so I checked all 4 tires and there right around 35 PSI so they are good. I lowered the spare and filled it up to 35 too. TPMS light is still on even when I try to reset it. Its nit blinking, just solid. I read in the owners manual that sometimes you have to rotate the spare 90 degrees because the sensor will be out of range to be able to be read. Hopefully this will fix it. However if it doesn’t fix it should I take it back to Discount Tire? Or should I just live with it?

You have OEM tpms right? How exactly did they “fix the battery”? Did they actually change a battery or replace the sensor?

My understanding is the whole sensor usually gets replaced. Changing batteries is some DIY shit that I can’t see a shop doing. You have to pry apart the sensor to get to the battery that is sealed under potting material. It’s not really a pop the battery out and replace it sort of deal. I can’t see a shop tearing up a sensor.

And you're holding the reset button for 10-15 seconds?

Very likely this... When a shop had to replace my TPMS with an aftermarket one they couldn't get it to pair to the ECU well at all. Ended up getting another OE one from Toyota.

take it back, the tires and TPMS sensors all should be working correctly, that's why you've paid them to do not half assed crap where you as the customer have to diagnose whats going on with the tires and TPMS

I was just holding it down till it starts blinking 3 times. So hold it down for 10-15 seconds with the key in the “on” position?
