When I start the truck, there is a tapping noise that goes away once the engine is warm...the frequency changes with RPM, and usually only happens in the morning. Once driven, the noise fails to re appear even after 8 hours of sitting. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

This happens to my four banger too. I’ve never been concerned about it, Toyota engines like to make noises.

My 2011 2.7 does it too...sounds like piston slap. 100,000 miles of use, and things have loosened up a bit. As long as it only does it on a cold start(1st start of the day) when temps are near or below freezing, I wouldn't worry about it. I use 5W30 in the summer and 0W20 in the winter...the thinner oil actually helps. The noise seems to fade away faster when I switch over to the 0W20 for the winter.

Piston slap is a possibility, lifter tick is another.

You may want to try upping the weight of the oil to 5-30 and check to see how it runs with a thicker oil grade.

Mine used to do that seems like it got better when I went to pennzoil platinum 5-30. I'm running pennzoil platinum 10-30 and my truck hasn't done it yet and I've cranked it up in about 25 degrees with the 10w-30. My truck calls for 5w-30 by the way.
I noticed it on my truck from about 50k miles to 150k it's at 168k now.

Or maybe I'm just slowly going deaf? But I can still hear the blower motor for the head ticking.

Mine has had cold start knock for the last 120,000 miles when ambient temps dip below 40-45°F or so. The noise usually disappears after a minute or two of idling.

I first encountered this in a 1958 Ford, 332 V-8, hydraulic lifters. I now have it in a 2008 Tacoma 2.7L, but only when it is 20 degrees F. or colder and the pickups not been started for several days. The oil is Mobil-1 TDT 5W-40, 5000 mile OCI, 118,000 miles on the pickup The 4 cyl. 2.7 has hyd. lifters also and the noise goes away in a moment or two, just like it did in the Ford, 60 years ago. I am convinced it is hydraulic lifters and totally nothing to worry about. Am I going to change the brand or viscosity of the oil? Nope.
