36,000 Mile Warranty - Things to Know?

As I'm nearing the 36,000 mile mark on my '17 TRD OR I decided to have a few odd behaviors on my truck looked at (parking sensor not working, popping noise from front driver side suspension in severe cold, etc.). I'm going into the dealer tomorrow morning and was wondering what everyone's experiences were with the 36,000 mile factory warranty?

Aside from everyone's general experiences, these are some of the things that I am wondering about specifically.

    1) Did they charge you for diagnosing the vehicle itself, or is that covered in the warranty?
    2) Did they check with you before making repairs that were not covered under the warranty?
    3) If they did find something wrong with the vehicle, were they reasonably willing to cover under warranty or did they go out of their way to find loopholes, etc.?

Thanks! I'm hoping that this thread will give us all some foresight on what to expect as more of us 3rd gen owners get close to the 36,000 mile benchmark!

NOTE: For context, the vehicle is my daily driver and is a vehicle I rely on. As such, it has seen it's fair use but at the same rate it has not been bounced off rocks, raced like a rally car in the dirt, or abused in any similar kind of way. An incident where I ignorantly used the 4x4 for a couple turns in a parking lot is about as mean as I have managed to be to it.

If its under warranty (36k) you are good to go, they will (or should) check out any concerns you have. A good dealer will generally cover minor stuff a bit over 36k as a gesture of good will. At least that has been my experience.
But to be sure, zoom in at first chance if under and have them check it out, its why we pay 32-48k for these.

Get the high pressure fuel pump checked. Mine just went bad at 29900, it sounded like a metal in metal ringing noise

The average cost for all vehicles sold in the US in 2017 was $35K. Our truck is not a Lexus or a Land Cruiser lol.
OP, take it in for your issues. If you are not having any other problems then there is nothing they can or will do.
What you are asking is akin to getting a new tire when the old tire still has good tread with the thought you might poke a hole in it someday.
    Good luck!

Any problems with wind noise, hood flutter, or pops in the dash when its cold. That stuff isn't covered in the extended warranty.

Just had my battery replaced free under the factory warranty with 32,000 miles. Be prepared for the service writer to try to get you to buy the 30K service.

So first of all, I wasn't asking them to rebuild my car as an outlandish form of preventative maintenance. I simply wondered how the warranty is handled and what to expect. All prior vehicles that I have owned have been land rovers. And the warranties on those are not actually warranties. They are sales tools used to get you to buy the car to begin with, and then to motivate you to get into the shop where they can up-sell. Nothing is actually covered, in practice.

Second of all, I'd like to point out that none other than Batman liked my original post. Thanks Batman!

Actually, they were incredibly helpful. I paid $30.00 for a full inspection and they honored the warranty for the couple things that were wrong (nothing major, these Toyotas are awesome). They actually took me out to the vehicle while it was raised and I talked to the mechanic 1:1 as we looked under the vehicle, and he showed me the condition of all the major components (except for the diffs and drive-train. This is a more detailed inspection, as it should be) and we talked about the few concerns I had. He then gave me a crash course in where to look for common issues that tend to develop on the Tacoma, specifically after off-roading. I actually had another (independent) mechanic who told me to get coolant changed every 30,000 and both the mechanic and the shop manager advised that that was un-necessary and was a waste of money. I didn't ask for anything like this either. All I asked was if they'd have a look and flush the coolant while they were at it, which of course I was happy to pay for.

So for those that come across this post with the same questions I did:

    1) I would not expect anything like the experience that I had. I did not ask for their level of attentiveness and detailed, personable attention, and definitely did not expect it.
    2) They did not try to up-sell me.
    3) At no time did they complain about honoring the warranty. It was 11/10 customer service.

Regarding the issues that TA2016, Citizen Rob, and El Duderino brought up, thanks you guys very much for your insight! I do have decent wind noise, but I'm not really too bent out of shape about that. Nothing that can't be drowned out by the radio.

And I luckily haven't had any issues with hood popping, batteries or sound related to the fuel injection pump. And up here this time of year our nights get to be around -15f so I'd imagine if there was going to be those kinds of issues they would have come up. Aside from paying for an inspection, I didn't feel right asking them to look at problems I did not have under the warranty so I did not ask them to explicitly look at these things.

You shoulda mentioned Land Rover. We would have understood. This is a Toyota and much different.
You can expect to go hundreds of thousands of miles simply by following the scheduled maintenance in the owners manual. That's it. Nothing hidden. No gimmicks.

However, never forget that every standard warranty from any company is simply a sales tool. If it were up to manufacturers there would never be a warranty on anything.

Absolutely! Nothing more true than that. But it's nice to see that, at least in this instance, Toyota realized the value of its warranty as a tool for building brand loyalty. Where as LR got me on that for a couple of service charges, there's a reason I started going to independent shops, and a good reason I don't own a land rover anymore.

Very cool, that's nice to see. I think that's a great way to put it.
