Hey guys I have been looking at the San Antonio thread and it seems like a good group of guys. I currently live in Utah but the wife likes the sound of San Antonio. I have never been but being from Utah I would like to know what kind of mild off roading there is here and outdoor activities? Maybe some of you all can pitch in?

Prob good to ask this in the SA thread. There's plenty of outdoor activities in the area. Difference between Texas and Utah is Texas has minimal public land. Big Bend is the largest public land area. There are however plenty of offroad parks in the area.

Well the weather is typically nice most of the year and winter is usually only about 2 months long if you can manage that, but the summers are pretty hot. As others have said not as much public land as you currently have, but there are places to go and the hill country has some great views to drive through and see. Depending on your career there is always jobs availalbe in the area as the SA area is growing quickly. If you make it down make sure to look us up.

I moved here from Colorado/Washington by virtue of the military. If you're looking for outdoor activities like those found in other western/mountain states then you're out of luck. There is some light/moderate hiking in the area: Government Canyon, Lost Maples, Hill Country State Natural Area, etc. There's a number of state parks within a 2 hour drive but Texas has no public lands outside of state and national parks. Big Bend is the closest you're going to get to anything like Utah, although it's pretty unique in its own right. It's also 6 hours away. There's a decent off-road park 1.5 hours to the north that we'll typically have people meeting up at every month or so. Summer is stupid hot but usually fairly dry and in the 8 years I've lived here it's snowed twice -- less than half an inch -- which completely crippled the city. SA also has some of the worst drivers in the country. But housing and gas is cheap and there's a ton of good jobs.

Yea the snow is one thing I am kind of tired of. I drive flatbed in the city here and it gets old every year dealing with people acting like they have never driven in it. I don't mind the heat and dry. That is how it is here in the summer. And I am not overly crazy over the outdoor activities but I do enjoy a good hike, mountain biking or off road trails or fishing spots, So it sounds pretty good for that. And yes the housing is one of the main reasons we were looking at San Antonio. The market went up here quite a bit and we live a few blocks from three refineries

The market in SA continues to grow from what it used to be, but of course I have been here now for over 20 years. Like any other major city there are some good areas of town and some that are not so good. When looking at homes here locally , SABOR is your best reference for what is for sale. You will need to be ready to purchase as I believe the market is still fairly active and listing don’t last long so have financing ready so you don’t loose out.

That is good to know. I think we might have to take a trip down there and check it out. Do you know what area are nicer area but not over priced? Since I drive around the city here I see people all the time buying a nice expensive home in a not so great area, I don't want to be that guy

The west side outside of Potranco off 1604 to the north side is a fairly good area. There are some areas on the NE side of town as well but not as familiar with those areas as I have never lived on that side of town. I guess your best bet would be is to come to town and get a feel for the area so you can narrow your search for a home, it is not hard to drive 20 miles acros town though as SA is really spread out. Some people don’t mind a commute to work and others want to live within 5-10 miles of where they work.

San antonio has two main highways circling around it with main streets all ending downtown. Kind of like a giant spider web. As long as you stay outside of the first loop(410) you should be fine. Preferably along the Northside of the city.

Thank you guys. I will have to take a trip down there and see how we like it. I have always been spoiled in having work less then 15 mins away so that would definitely be nice. We have a terminal I can transfer to on the east side there so that might work out
