This 1GR-FE had a good amount of aluminum in the oil and filter (see pic). Also has little plastic shards from worn tensioner. When I tore it down I found scaring on the rod bearings also. I think I found the original problem. The oil pump cover (pic) has some scaring.

What do you guys think? If the aluminum isn't from the oil pump, where else can it be from.

I would think that is the culprit. Looks to be worn is it grooved? It looks like it is.

What do the gears look like?

Which weight oil do you use?

Bearing material it seems. How do the rod journals look?

Have you pulled the main caps to inspect the main journals and bearings?

The last picture appears to show a (smoked) main bearing.

Now you get to build it how you want it to me. Take your time. Do it right. Do it right the first time, because...who among us has the time to do it a second time? It's going to be awesome when you are done. On the bright side, it only gets better from here!

The gears look good, I'll grab some pics. The grooves you can feel with a pic, barely with your finger, the surface is smoothed out in that area.

This is an extra engine, the J-VIN 1GR-FE in my truck is still running great :) if I rebuild this one, for sure I'll take my time and do it right. :)

This is just screen caps from video. I video, paint mark, bag, tag, and document every tear down , probably more so than CSI on TV, lol! Anyone teach me how to turn like 10 hours of video into one of those cool fast rapid still shot things, I'll show you how tear down a 1GR-FE.

    Good evening Joseph,
I disassemble the engine of my 2008 Tacoma TRD Sport and it look like yours, connecting rods bearing gone, crank bearing worn, etc. Can you tell me what cause that problem in your engine, it look like it ran w/o lubrification but what cause it. The oil and oil filter were changed 3weeks before the engine start knocking hard. The oil level was has it should. I'm considering different options, but I want to isolate the cause of the problem before any further move. That is why I found your post very valuable to me, I want to know more about your story.

    Thank you
    Mark
