    Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum but I found what I was looking for. My 2016 was purchased new and last week, 1st week of December 2018 I noticed my backseat and headliner was wet after washing in a drive thru. I took it to my local dealer and made an appointment that was 9 days out. By the time I took it in I was 625 miles past warranty. Since Thursday of this week I've been waiting to hear back as to whether the "Service Manager" will cover this problem. I'm told if not it will be $1500.00, that's a lot of money for something that should never have happened. I'm hoping to hear from the manager next week, if they say I have to pay for it I might have to use some of that 'Flex Seal' tape. It's hell getting old and being on Social Security.

They ‘should’ cover it, but if they don’t... it is the seal that has failed, and can be replaced yourself. The cost is the time, not the parts.

Trust me, if that happens to me I would have the dealership fix it no matter the mileage. A car that is 2 weeks old should not have problems like that and if they do the automaker should be responsible for that.

If you reported the problem and scheduled the appointment before 25000m, put your boot up their arse if they don't fix it.

I always did scheduling on line. Too many numbskulls in service dept and too much slips through cracks to not have written documentation.

I got a run around about the blower motor recall. I told them to just mail me the damned thing and I'll replace it myself.

It's a known issue. As long as it's not cracked... shouldn't be a worry. A few have been over torqued and cracked the outside. Those have been harder to get done under warranty.

The truck is two years old, and out of warranty.

OP hasn't mentioned what the mileage was at the time he made the appointment, and whether or not it was in person or over the phone.
Sounds like it was likely just out of warranty, and having been there personally, I'm guessing it won't be covered.

Read that too fast. I saw Dec. 8th and thought he bought it then. Did not realize it was a 2016.

If you actually read what he posted, he says he made the appointment before being out of warranty. By the time appointment he was 625 miles past warranty.

The dealer should do the right thing and fix it at no cost to the OP. It’s absurd a new vehicle (2 years is still new and should not be having issues with it) would leak or have any issues like this and it would be more absurd if Toyota didn’t do the right thing.

If YOU actually read what the OP wrote, nowhere does he state that it was in warranty at the time he made the appointment, only that it was well past it a little more than a week later.

Edit to note: OP, I do hope they take care of you.

You can infer from the information given that he was 625 miles out of warranty by the time the 9 days was up. Or else I doubt he would of said what he said.

OP, never mind crazy 3rd Gen owners, if they don’t warranty it, you can fix it with silicone or something similar.

@jmneill not sure why this would be included in the post if he wasn’t in warranty when the issue occurred and was out of warranty by the time the dealership was able to inspect the vehicle.

It IS out of warranty by 600+ miles. The problem I see is it is a Toyota problem and nothing I did. Just sayin'

I would be interested in seeing how this is resolved. There always seems to be some gamesmanship involved with the dealers/warranty/miles part. Hope it gets fixed for you!

Due to the fact that other 2016 trucks suffered this issue and Toyota found what the problem was, there should be no problem covering it. The part in question is not really a wear item due to mileage, so I would bring that to their attention. If the dealer says it will not be covered, ask the Service manager to call the warranty department with you in the office and the phone on speaker, and have the warranty department tell you themselves it will not be covered. I can say with confidence if you request this, then magically the dealer will decide to cover it without making the call. If someone has the old vs new part number you could also have that to ask why the change in part numbers after 1 year of production. All this is of course a last resort and don't go in guns blazing. If the first answer is "not covered", politely ask for the reason, if they reply "out of warranty due to miles", ask about a goodwill repair, then if they say they cant do that, pull the ammo out.

I had the same problem on my 2017 and it was covered under warranty, but I could have easily fixed it with a bead of silicone. That is not an area that most people will ever have to move or service, so if your dealer won't repair it, I'd put a nice clean bead of silicone around it and call it good. It worked for me for a few weeks during heavy downpour until the dealer could get the part and repair it.
