Hey, my sister just totaled her car last week and I'm thinking about buying her a used car. Specifically a 2015 Nissan Pathfinder S. It's priced at $15,000 with a little over 50,000 miles (2wd). What do you guys (or gals) think? Is that a good deal and are the Pathfinders reliable? Would love to get her a used Highlander or 4runner but they cost too much, and I'm still paying off my truck. BTW she is still in college and has no job.

    Appreciate any advice.

Nice cars. 45000 new. Probably a decent deal

I agree. More money upfront but a much better vehicle.

I traded a 2016 pathfinder S with 4wd. Got 18,000 for it with 20,000 miles. It had 3 recalls in a year. Got the wife a 4 runner. That pathfinder nee was probably around 24,000. I would look for something else. If she is on a budget get her a used Camry

I'd get something else like a 4 Runner or Pilot. I was looking at one (2015\2016 model) for my wife a few year's ago when needed to let go of her Xterra. Our service guy at Nissan told us not to buy a Pathfinder because they weren't that good and they had a lot of transmission problems. He said they had swapped out a bunch of transmissions because they were always failing. He also told us he didn't understand why Nissan went from rear wheel drive to front wheel drive and ruined the Pathfinder. Just my 2 cents, good luck with whatever you buy

Just a humble suggestion. I would buy what ‘ she” needs, not what you do. Maybe a Corolla or Camry .
She has no job. It’s going to be much more expensive keeping a 4 Runner on the road than a Corolla. I would do anything to keep the reliability up and driving expense down...Corolla.

I agree after actually reading the OP instead of skimming, I'd definitely go for a Corolla! Good gas mileage, reliability!!

Had no idea that the Pathfinders had transmission issues. I guess I'll have to keep looking and perhaps continue with the Toyota heritage. Appreciate the feedback guys!

In 2013 they switched to Nissan's CVT Transmission. Nissan is known for having the worst CVT's in there vehicles. I'm not sure of the pre 2013 before they "crossovered" them and they had a traditional automatic.

Why not a 4runner? Nissan has no longevity at all, they are simply poor quality.

What was her old car? If you’re going 2WD get a RAV4 or something. If she needs more space than that then maybe bump it up but Nissan is a value vehicle. The interiors of some of their vehicles are terrible.

I love the old school body-on-frame Pathfinders and had a 1996 model before my Tacoma. The new Pathfinder is a crossover and should be called the "Murano XL".

A Yaris or Scion of some type should be pretty cheap to buy and operate so you can save money

The CVT pathfinders still have trans issues, I wouldn't own one, I worked at nissan and I changed a trans a day.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
Ive always looked at Nissan (and infinity) like that of Mitsubishi, Mazda, and Subaru. Sub par quality Japanese brands.

Go for Toyota or Honda. There is a reason Nissan vehicles depreciate like a rock. Poor reliability.
