To see my issue I would grab the top of the seat back and pull front to back from the top of the seat back. It fealt really tight until I got the shaking just right then holy crap was it loose. All my play is in the rails though. Not a ton that can be done about it.

Dealer even swapped my seat all I got from that was broken wiring harness clips. :(

I drove a RAV4 the other day as a loaner and it had the same passenger seat track rattle as the Tacoma. I actually got out of the car to look up under the front wheel well and at the tire. Thought I ran over something.

Couldn't find the source. Decided no biggie, I'd be done with the car in a day. I eventually discovered it was the seat track when I reached over to rest my arm on top of the passenger seat and the rattle stopped.

Well I think I have resolved this. A few days driving and I no longer have the “thus” in the back of my seat.

I removed the rear seat backing and identified the headrest restraint. It’s a funky metal bracket on a hinge. It definitely had some play and that’s exactly what I was feeling when braking hard. I put some tape holding it in the back position and all is well so far:D

Exact same issue with my 3 week old truck.Mine did it since day one.A micro fiber towel eliminated it for me.Doubt there is any thing the dealer can do about it.

I have the exact same thing as you did, a thunking/popping sound and feeling in my lower back, had it since day one but "could not replicate". Happens all the time. Mine does it though when turning, and my body applies pressure left and/or right. I am going to open the back of my seat up after seeing what you posted and see if i can figure it out. Thanks!

I just bought (2 weeks ago) a 2021 Tacoma TRD Off Road and also have the same issue with the passenger seat rattling. Given this post started in 2018 and now 2021, they obviously haven’t fixed the issue.

Just took my 2020 DC Tacoma TRD Off Road with less than 1500 km on it to the dealership as the passenger seat has just started rattling like crazy. They're going to replace the entire seat frame to see if that fixes the problem. The service guy said it was not an uncommon problem but no guaranteed fix. That's pretty poor of Toyota given that this appears to be a well known issue.

Happy to have found others with this issue (but, in reality, not really). I have a 2021 Tacoma Sport with only 1,500 miles and that rattle has been driving me nuts for 1,500 miles...hit a bump, ghost rattle...but I did eventually figure it was the passenger seat back.

Thankful to know I'm not alone and will be contacting Toyota to see what they do...

Had a 2018 Offroad with a headliner rattle as well - they had to fix it and replace the liner...amazing how these seem like constant issues...

I miss my '98 that had 240K miles and barely an issue...

2020 TRD pro. purchased Sept 2020. Mine does this as well. Finally decided to look online if there was a fix and found this thread.
Anyone found a fix for this?

I finally managed to fix mine without replacing the seat (dealership said they’d ordered it but never did). Turns out it was the centre console vibrating against the passenger seat when empty. All I did was use some Meguiars leather conditioner a few time where the passenger seat was rubbing - that little bit of softening basically fixed the problem.
