Great tip. I have helped a couple coworkers redo their fuse taps because they didn't think it made a difference. When I showed them with a meter how the voltage travels, it made sense then.

Of course it depends on the camera. Some draw more than others. But even if it only turns on when it detects motion there is some current draw as it has to "watch" for motion. It can drain your battery. Probably not overnight if it just stays in watch mode, but since there is a draw and nothing replenishing your battery it will eventually drain it.

Thanks again OP. Got mine installed tonight and came out super clean. Wouldnt have attempted without this write up. Obviously cant complete a project without one hiccup; I used a different hardwire kit and assumed it came with the add a fuse but did not. Mind Amazon linking me to a standalone add a fuse I could use for this situation? I went with the wiper fuse as OP did. Would this product be correct? Not super familiar with this stuff.

My camera came with a fuse tap and no fuses. I'm going to tap into wiper 30A. What's the other fuse I need?

Start with the right fuse tap first. Tacoma uses the low profile mini.

Thanks for the reply. So I put the 30A fuse from Wiper on the right slot. What size as in amps do I put on the left? Sorry if these are dumb questions.

Just grab the mini fuses as you won’t be able to put the cover back on the fuses anyway

Mine came with a 5 amp for the dash cam.
Maybe look on the camera manufacturers website or email them to be sure.

It was the kick panel I struggled with. Finally figured out the magic method.

And persistence. Saw a poster today that said: “I figured out that adulthood is really all about Googling how to do shit.” Sort of hit the mark.

    Some great info here.

I cheated with my setup. I’ve got an Aukey DR-01 ready to go in. Aukey sells a hardwire kit that pulls power from the OBD2 port. I simply purchased a splitter for the port so I can run that and my ScanGuage2 simultaneously.

Of course what that doesn’t solve is if you take your vehicle in for service and they run a diagnostic on it and don’t plug your connector back in and crash the truck during their diagnostic test drive.

    Let’s hope that’s a double jeopardy case.

Rexing V1LG for me. I used the hard wire kit which comes with an add-a-fuse tap which I used on the sun roof fuse since I don't have a sun roof.
