I took a hit just to the hitch with a similar driver side bumper gap. Spray painted my hitch black and called it a day.

The other car .. no so much.

OP similar thing happened to me a few months back with my truck. They hit me at least at 50-55 mph on the freeway. They were completely underneath my truck. I ended up throwing my truck into 4wd and dragged their car with mine off the freeway. I told her to put her car in park so I could separate from hers. Had it inspected by AAA/ Longo Toyota collision. No frame damage, the bumpers are meant to move and absorb the forces to protect the frame to an extent the guy told me. They put a new bumper and tail hitch and that was it. I think you’ll be fine. I would buy an awesome bumper btw

Thanks for the great information, yea I didn't even get hit at probably 10 mph. I was the 3rd and final car to get hit in the line of cars rear ended by somebody texting and driving. That's why I was so surprised to see this and didnt really expect frame damage but since the tow hitch took the whole impact I couldnt see what would cause the bumper to flex like that. I wish the turn around on bumpers wasn't so long so I could test fit it just to make sure before I put the claim in.

I just had the same thing happen to me the end of November and mine's going into the shop on January 2.

I'm personally trying to work with the person who bumped me. My damage is limited to the DS plastic cap / inner bracket and the black plastic step. I think my hitch is okay. Insurance gave me about $600 in the first go. The bodyshop can bring insurance back out for a supplemental claim if the tow hitch is tweaked.

The woman who bumped me is going to try to keep the whole claim under the surcharge threshold by paying for anything above/beyond the initial claim, so I'm hoping for everyone's sake the hitch is fine (it visually looks fine) and I can just get the cap and step done and be done with it.

The shame is I don't really care for the aesthetics of the non-high clearance bumpers, and I don't want to cut up the truck for one of those, so I'm going to go back to OEM and be done with it.

Doesn't look like any frame damage. Insurance will more than likely write on the estimate for shop to setup and measure on their frame machine to verify. Laser measuring systems are very precise. If there is any frame damage it is pretty common and can be repaired to factory specs. Insurance company is going to write to replace damaged parts with the parts that are already on the vehicle. You own the vehicle and if you want to use the money the insurance company gives you to buy an aftermarket steel bumper, that is your right. I was an insurance adjuster for almost 20 years and now work as an estimator at a collision repair center.

So lucky. Im waiting for someone texting to rear end me so I can get the money and get a new rear bumper. I agree with others, the engineers will make other stuff bend to save the frame.

I took a hit to the hitch receiver on my 2nd gen. I was stopped at a stop sign and someone hit me from behind at maybe 20mph. No visible damage, but they looked at it at the dealer with their "laser measurer" and determined that the frame was bent. They bent it back and it was fixed.

Moral of the story- take it in for a professional analysis while it's fresh and insurance is paying attention.

Depends on the size of the car/truck that hits you. If it’s a rice burner, or even a normal car, those will tear up the offending car. Now if it’s a lifted truck or something similar, that and the bumper will do you no good anyways.

What I’m saying is that it works good for a minimal slow moving fender bender. At high speeds, nothing will save you! Lol

take a look at the bed/cab alignment. if it is off the frame may have been tweaked. Not an exact science though as the bed may not have the best alignment from the factory.

The bumper is nothing more than expensive decoration a kid on a bicycle can bend them. If there is frame damage they would be nothing left of that bumper. If you put a crane hook through the hitch you could lift the entire truck without damage.

I was rear ended while stopped at a stop light by a little Volks Wagon. I had a ball on the hitch at the time. The VW was impaled by the ball which pulled the hitch down and bent the frame when it went under the truck.
