I'm in a bit of a special situation. And Mike and Monte scraped together everything they could for these trips - we won't be so lucky next year is my guess. :pout:

But hey, on the bright side - some cool pics and stories to read while at work - just be sure to have Alt+Tab to some spreadsheet right at hand! ;)

Yeah, I always appreciate your guys' writeups! They're a huge inspiration. We're planning a Canyonlands trip this Oct, and I'm taking a lot away from your Maze trip.

(I bound my middle-mouse button to Windows Task View. Works great!)

I stole an idea from several pages back to get my tent useable while I wait for the SOS rack. I used the superstrut conduit rack from Lowe's. Thanks TW!IMG_20190101_133524_01.jpg

I originally used 4 tie downs to hoist up my rack and tent. It worked with my lighter tent but my iKamper is heavier, then I added a Hi Lift to the rack and it was too heavy to easily go up and down. I got this hoist and it works great. Some of the reviews talk about it falling and that’s because you need to secure the cable connector to the main axle a little better, then it works great. I use my drill to go up and down.

I setup a Harken Hoister ($160 on amazon right now) to lift off the tent, bed rack, hi-lift, and truck shower. Doesn't come with a winch, but would be super easy to set one up to perform the up/down, and the hoist itself works really well. Honestly though, you get so much pulley leverage with the Harken that you don't really need a winch.

I bought this as well. But have not hooked it up.
I can load tent solo on my bed rails now.
I just lay two 2x6's boards across the back, and use leverage to do most the work.
Just tip it over and slides right onto the truck.

I'm currently using a FrontRunner Rack over the cab of the truck with the frontrunner quick release RTT mounts. Works great and I have no worries of them failing. My prinsu over the cap though.. that thing flexes way too much for me to stand on it so I'll be swapping that to a frontrunner rack eventually next year.

...Monte sitting on the edge, any me laying out over it to snap shots down the cliff edge were more than Mike could stomach. "Stop it guys, I can't watch!" he finally said as he headed back to the trucks to wait, letting us know that @mrs.turbodb and @MissBlackdawg would surely not be happy with us....

Random question, but has anyone fabricated an awning onto their tent? I have a Tepui kukenam and was wondering if it’s possible to get some canvas material and sew/fab the hood/extension that comes with the larger tents, ie Autana. I’m not looking for the full awning to the ground, just the part that creates a portal up into the tent...would be nice on rainy days.

Does anyone have a tent mounted on low-rise bed bars use their annex? The wife is begging me to attach ours on the next outing but I've only got 8" rise bars to keep the tent below the cab and it seems like the bottom of the tent is too low to the ground to utilize it. Am I over thinking it?

I mean...are you guys short? I couldn't walk under that at 5'10" tall. Your annex will just be bunched up on the walls which is sorta a pain for the doors to be usable, but you can make it work.

Nope. I'm 5'11", she's 5'10" you can't even stand up under the tent. Just wondering if it would even be usable.

yeah, to an extent. like I said just bunched up walls...wind may cause more issue with it having so much slack down that low.

lol! I usually just fight putting them on up in the tent. it's a lot easier in the taller softshell than it was in my short hardshell tent that's for sure.
