Not actually difficult, but with their cartridge type filters they always seem to be messier than a simple screw on filter.

But the new Ranger apparently takes it up a notch.

You need to Remove The Wheel in order to change the oil filter.

Hey, oil change is also the perfect time to rotate the tires.

Maybe they are just nudging you in that direction?

 

Not surprised. Vehicles are designed by engineers, not the guys who actually do work on them. Always makes me think of the episode of mythbusters when the guys were bitching cause they had to remove a wheel to replace the battery on a car. Valid bitching in my opinion though.

 

I posted this on the 3 gen subforum and took some heat for posting this (aww it's no big deal) and the thread got locked. Hope it fares better for you OP. For the record I think it's dumb to have to do this to change the oil. After 27 years in industrial and institutional maintenance two truisms have come to light.

A. The more difficult it is to perform the scheduled maintenance, the more likely it will either be half assed or deferred completely.

B. The more steps one has to take in performing that maintenance task, the more likely it will get screwed up in some fashion or another.

Your mileage may vary.

Look up the oil change for an Audi R8. It’s a major pain and changed my desire to own one.

 

If I recall correctly, my old 2006 Ranger had a similar oil filter location.

 

I just don't see the big freakin deal, so you have to take a tire off, what's so extremely difficult about that? Good time to rotate the tires and inspect everything, plus its not like you have to perform this task once a week as its 10K OCIs.

 

It’s almost no different than my old 2008 TL, if anything dealerships will make a killing for those that don’t want to bother with it at home.

 

The oil filter location on the 3rd gen 4runners is similar. I don't have to take the wheel off, but I do have to crank the steering wheel all the way and access the filter from the wheel well. It takes a little contorting.

 

I have a floor jack, compressed air, and an impact gun so taking tires off is no problem.

Using the factory jack and lug wrench would royally suck.

 

literally already been addressed, you can just crank to wheel one way or the other and reach in there, same shit with new gen cummins. its honestly easier than having to jack up the vehicle and crawl underneath.

edit: might be messier if your a n00b but its not the end of the world to do a wheel well oil change.

 

If you're able to do it by just turning the wheel, then that's no biggie at all.

I've never had a vehicle that you had to do the oil change through the wheelwell.

I did have a Lincoln MKVIII LSC that required advanced yoga skills and a roll of aluminum foil to change

 

Right, yesterday they admitted it was a fake news story and all you need to do is turn the wheel to the side. Seems like they like making you contort in order to do things anymore.

 

Pretty much the same as the procedure on the 3.4 V6.

 

I'm guessing that there aren't too many aircraft mechanics in this thread.....

The more complex a machine becomes, the more involved the maintenance and repair becomes.....
