    X3

I also put a half hitch on it.
Not for any strength but for some reason if it would slip it would show a long tang and alert me their could be an issue.

I gotta disagree fellas. The Palomar is a much better knot to tie with mono or fluoro than with braid. When tied with braid it just doesn’t provide enough friction against itself to be as strong as a uni. A lot of fishing line companies and other folks have actually done testing, and the uni is significantly stronger than the Palomar. I’ve had a couple Palomars slip, they were my favorite mono/fluoro knot because they were easy to tie and never slipped. After I had the issues with braid I did the research that pointed me in the direction of the uni. With braid I do 10-12 turns through the loop, more turns for smaller test line that has less surface area for friction. I’ve found a technique where I can do it in about 30 seconds.

    Oh I know..
And to a certain extent I agree.
I do use a uni sometimes..
    Agree with the tests
But I still like my polomar with the added half hitch.

    What ever works for you.

If I’d never had a Palomar slip I’d still be using it. Soooo easy to tie.

That's interesting. I always thought Palomar was best, but it looks like the San Diego jam and "braid uni" are both better. I have never had a problem with it.

I should mention that I sometimes burn the tag end to give it a mushroom tip. I always thought that would keep it from slipping through. Maybe I was right.

well maybe I was not as clear as I thinking. I currently have used the uni knot to tie a leader to braided line. I use the palomar knot to tie my hooks off. still never had a pull through with a palomar knot on the hook. I havent used it for connection knot. I am anxious to try the FG knot.

Right.. I just thought it was funny because of the previous discussion of the FG knot.

Ohhhh this is a good thread. Braid has definitely changed the way I fish for the better. I fish straight braid quite a bit in the surf for halibut here in So-Cal. When visibility is poor, I've found there's no need for a fluoro top shot. This won't apply to a lot of you freshwater guys. Anyways, between these 3 knots, you can do just about everything and IMO are the tried/proven best knots. I prefer the RP knot over the Uni/Uni because for me it's faster & easier to tie, and smaller than the uni for casting purposes.

Terminal Braid - Palomar or Doubled Palomar when fishing heavy braid
Terminal Fluoro/Mono - San Diego Jam
    Braid to Fluoro/Mono - RP/Royal Polaris knot

    How to tie the RP:

FYI The Royal Polaris & the Shogun are great boats for anyone looking to catch some serious tuna out of Southern CA.

I stand by the uni over the Palomar for braid to terminal tackle. Agree to disagree!

I do agree that fluoro isn’t necessary in the surf. I don’t ever use it on surf casters. Everything else I have that’s relatively small has a fluoro leader. Trolling for pelagic species with my bigger conventional setups I don’t use it, no one does. It’s insanely expensive at that size and not necessary.

I’d never heard of the RP before, I’ll check it out. Always game to learn a new knot!

I’m betting that many techniques are different between our two coasts given the differences in conditions and species. Would love to fish the Pacific some time.

    Great thread! My go-to:
All inshore - regardless of what I’m after and where I’m fishing from (surf, jetties, Catalina, Clemente)
    1. Braid to flouro (all weights): improved RP with a little superglue
    2. Terminal: Palomar

*exception is big bluefin- then I go to:
    Braid to flouro: Bimini twist
    Terminal: double San Diego Jam

I like the New Lo Ann out of SD
