my 2017 offroad double cab in going to need some tires shortly after this winter. Im snowboarding in the mountains every weekend and like to camp in the summer. Plan on pushing the taco offroad on trails alot this summer. Any suggestions on a A/T tire and cost isnt much of a issue. 265/70/16 or 265/75/16. Thank you Tacoma Nation

Most people will simply provide what tire they like so it will come down to personal preference. I’m not a huge fan of A/T tires but a lot of people like Goodyear Duratracs for use Offroad and in winter.

There are lots of tire threads on here that could help you in your search. The choices are almost dizzying at times. The Duratracs are good tires, as are the Falken Wildpeak AT3W, which I settled on. Below is a good thread to get you started. Best of luck and welcome to TW!

Make sure you really look at all reviews of duratracs and not just want you want to look at. A lot of people have some pretty bad experience with duratracs.

Same goes for the wildpeak by falken. It was a cool looking tire that no one really had much road time with when it first came out but It’s been enough time now to where people are coming out with some real criticisms of the tire

Edit: my personal recommendation would be cooler AT3’s

I think the same could be said of any tire. I had the AT3’s on my second gen and they never felt balanced but they are known as being good tires. As long as these tires are being manufactured in the numbers they are pushing out, anyone can get a bad set. Cooper has come a long way over the years, just as Falken and some of the other non-major brands.

I spent a year on the stock GYs, considering and comparing.
    Purchased KO2 265/75/16 10ply.
Cost isn't an issue with me and I'm patient.
I've run AT tires from Cooper, Falken, Nitto, BFG, Toyo, GY on previous trucks and SUVs.
I travel, play and work in some nasty, remote environments and have never had issues with any of them.

just put Cooper AT3 S4's on mine and have about 3500 on them and no noise on highway, they ride great and were within a couple bucs of wildpeaks. 265-75-16's.

I had DuraTracs on my 99 and really loved their offroad performance, but on the highway, after about 10,000 miles they became very noisy. And by very noisy, I mean loud enough that I couldn't hear the stereo without cranking it and my wife knew I was home long before I pulled into the driveway..

Absolutely! The important point here is to really choose a tire based on what you do with the truck. Wanting a tire for mountain driving and camping is great but if you do that only 10% of the time really think about what you need vs. what you want or looks cool.

Ultimately that's why AT tires exist, right? Aggressive tread style for a tire that lives mostly on concrete. I have the KO2s, but in the past I've had Nittos. I'm pretty sure that all AT tires are more or less equal for a 90/10 split.

Mud tires would look bitchin' but we gotta drive to work everyday!

I've had BF AT, General Grabber AT, Yokohama Geolandar AT (my favorite of the 3), and getting Falken AT3W installed tomorrow. Have heard alot of good, and alot of bad about them. So guess we'll see. Thankfully they're cheap as balls (265/65r17 are only $130) though I chose the E Load, so a little pricier. If these don't work, I'm going back to my original plan of BFG KM3s. Everything about those tires had me wanting them, but heard too many people say the 265/70r17s rub when other brands of that size done, and not ready just yet to install the lift due to cold weather.

I have gone back and fourth with this same topic and ultimately, I think there are two motivators to buying tires. 1). Looks/Appearance regardless of how you use the truck. 2.) The purpose for the tire for how you use the truck. Most people claim to be shopping for reason number 2, but are really buying for reason number 1. Most professionals will tell you that you should run a dedicated winter tire as the rubber composition is intended to stay soft in cold temps and allow better grip, but in the summer and heat would be too soft and cause poor handling as well as quick tire wear and poor braking. There is a YouTube channel called "Engineering Explained" who did a test of this very subject. Worth a watch. Now, with all that being said, if you want to the truck to stand out and look beefy and have aggressive looks, then go for it and just be happy with the decision. Just my $.02 worth.

Very good points. I'm in the #2 crowd which is why I have 3 sets of wheels and tires. :)
