OK, Tacoma owners, I know we have a ton of tire threads but a couple of us were talking and we are trying to get some advice on a better than stock "aggressive" AT tire in 265/75/16 and, for Sween224, a 275/70/17.

Neither one of us need or want an E load range tire and both prefer a C load range, maybe a D at most. Both trucks are daily drivers. I am in the SE USA and Sween224 is in NY. In these sizes we have found the Duratrac and Toyo AT2 Extreme. I have searched through TW and have not really found a detailed discussion on point as it relates to a C rated tires. I do not plan (at least at this time) to lift mine so the 265/75/16 is the most tire I can get on my 17 OR.

I also spoke with the Cooper folks and was told the AT3 was all they had in my size. I have had that tire before on my second gen and want a more aggressive tread, so Cooper is out. The options really don't look so hot as of now but I was hoping to get some help from some of my more "learned" TW members. Thanks.

First, thank you for your service! I spent some time in as well. :) When growing up my father an grandfather both owned trucking businesses that hauled coal out of strip mines. We were constantly trying to find the best tires that offered the most bang for the buck and Toyo came up often, as did a little known brand at the time (Sumitomo). I hope to get several responses back because I'm genuinely stumped. I would prefer a hybrid type tire but am limited by my size choice. Is the Toyo more aggressive than my stock Wrangler Adventure with Kevlar?

I've done a lot of research on this myself. I found that the choices are very limited, obviously. However, what I found in a C rating was the Duratrac, Cooper AT3, and Toyo AT2. If by chance you wanted an MT, the General Grabber X3 is in a C rating in 265/75r16!

Thanks, brother! I even lobbied hard for Cooper to give us some more choices. They have to be sick of my emails by now! I would like to have the Toyo RT or even Cooper ST Maxx but no dice. I'm hoping someone will come up with something. How would that Grabber X3 be? I'm afraid it might be too loud for me and have also heard they can be heavy. I have had good luck with Generals over the years and may at least look at it but really wish I could get a hybrid.

ST MAXXs don't come in that size?

Goodyear Authority is another option. They most likely have it in that size.

Goodyear is huge so you can find people that love them and hate them. My experience with them over the years has been very, very good. I have heard of folks complaining about the Duratracs as far as road noise when they start wearing down some. I used to like Continental tires for some of my cars. They were always very quiet UNTIL they started wearing down a bit and then they would run you out of the car!

You're welcome, I see you're a fellow DevilDog! I spent some time in Twentynine Palms with 1/7 after 8th & I. Anyway, yea, I wish the ST Maxx was in a C rating. My search would be OVER! Because the Grabber X3 is an MT it is on the heavier side at 53lbs. But, the same weight as the KO2 in 265/75r16e. I'm sure it's somewhat loud as it's an MT.

I can't understand why more people aren't going with the General Grabber X3. I'm giving that one a hard look when I finally break down and buy tires. It's C rated and lighter than the KO2s.

If you go with toyo at2 the C loads arent as aggressive as the E load. Tbh they dont look aggressive at all to me but thats my opinion. I have the toyo at2 E load and when i see someone with the same tire in C load they dont look near as aggressive as mine.

Duratracs are one of the best all around tires I've ever run.

I've had several sets of Duratracs. The "challenges" I have had some that are tough to keep balanced. I've never had an issue with sidewall strength but it's a common criticism of them. I've never found an all terrain/mud hybrid that can outperform it in snow, mud or wet pavement. They're pricey.

Nope. If thy did they would be on my truck like yesterday! They offer an E load range but I just don't need that where I am. Sticky clay and soft mud is all I have to contend with and I don't need the E. I want either a C or D at most.

What about opting for the Toyo ATII Extreme? It is supposed to have a bit more tread but I'm not sure if it comes in C...

This is very helpful. I can get them for $198 a tire and am leaning that way anyway. My biggest hesitation is that I have heard about balance issues and that is something that would drive me insane. I wonder when these tire manufacturers are going to figure out there are a zillion Tacos on the road in sizes that they are just not giving us many options on???

You're not going with heavy tires (E rated) you're staying C. Also you're not going super large on them which increases odds for balance issues when going 32's and 33's.

Yessir!!! Mostly Eastern Seaboard stuff for me... Same here on the ST Maxx - LOVE that tire and would look no further IF Cooper would just make them... Anyone running the X3 and can comment on the noise?

I want to say The extremes are all E load and the smallest tire they make is 285/75/17 and i believe thats the only tire size they offer for a 17" wheel.

Your best bet would be the duratracs with a load range D. Those will be my next tire for sure. Good amount of my buddies run that tire and zero complaints.
