Trying to decide if I need a 50mm prime for my D5600. Already have a 35mm prime. Does anyone have both and use both? They’re only about $175 now, and I’m thinking it might be a fun addition to the lens collection, but since the 35mm is basically equivalent to a 50mm FX lens, I don’t know if I need the extra magnification of a 50mm for a DX camera.

No sure how useful it would be. Are you set on a prime lens? the Sigma 17-50 2.8 is a great/sharp lens that would give you both. Equiv to a 24-70 on a ff and way smaller.

If you like doing portraits, the 75mm equivalent is very useful as is the wide aperture that you wouldn't get with a zoom. The Nikon 50's are bargains and worth it imo. I agree that 50mm equivalent ( i.e 35 ) is my favorite focal length for general photography. But I have a full frame ( got a used D300 for a bargain some years ago ) and use the 50mm most.

We’ll see. Might pick one up. I already have a 70-300mm zoom, plus the kit lens and the 35mm prime. For the price, I don’t think I could go wrong adding a 50mm prime.

    None yet.
I know I am WAY late to the game here (got a new SR 4x4 in July and joined TW a few days later) but did you ever get the 50mm? Back when I shot with a DX format my 50 was always my go to lens. After that it was a 24mm.
