Mod at your own risk. Not responsible for electrical FU
    For entertainment purposes only.
    Mod on...or buy ready made
The Cargo Lamp switch has Off-Door-On. You could leave the cargo switch OFF and have the added lamps ON as you unlock the truck. Adding lights to puddle/rock/step is as simple as the following.
    upload_2019-4-12_14-11-6.jpg

Much simpler, but Deck Light SW dependant (if DL SW is OFF, no auto ON & OFF) Again ON by added SW, "auto" off if fused power is BATT sourced.

The harness is "new". @kmorgan3 could make the custom harness. PM him

Any of these can be added to the pigtail, or just use regular butt connectors.

Sooooo......total noob electrical idiot here looking for help.

I'm looking for a new project this upcoming weekend and you seem like an electrical wizard. I can work my way around the garage just dont know much about electrical. I've been wanting to add mattgecko led bed lights, but want them wired to the cargo switch. I understand the install process......I think. I think I understand the diagram, but maybe you could break it down a little more. Like a electrical for dummies breakdown.

I'm wanting to wire the led bed lights in the most safest and OEM looking way as possible. Seems logical to me to wire the bed light's to the cargo switch. I'm told to wire the lights to a relay would be the safest way. This would be the route I want to go with. Trying to avoid as many electrical nightmares as possible. I've seen several threads on wiring bed lights to the cargo switch, but not much of them are wired the same way.

What would you be your suggestion for doing this? I could send you some bucks to buy your favorite six pack in exchange for some some instructions that would help me out. Thanks!!

What do you need to be cleared/explained? You are correct to use a relay to any added lights, it keeps the gremlins away.
So, getting the LED's you want for the bed is a start. Then a way to keep them fixed without them falling as you wheel, a route for the wires (drill hole, or out thru the side cubbies) to the cab for power, you can ground the them to frame near bed. Keep the relay in the cab or get a weatherproof on and place in engine room. If you place relay in cab, you'll need a way for it not to flop around. For always ON juice to the added bed LED's the sliding roof fuse is an excellent location to add an Add-a-circuit.

Awesome thanks so much for the reply!

Here's my laundry list of dumb questions.
    1. So I understand how to wire a four pin relay. I'll need an inline fuse from the battery to the relay, right? Will I also need an inline fuse from the wire tap from the cargo switch to the relay? What size fuse?
    2. Is it best to wire the relay closer to the battery or closer to the cargo switch inside the cab? Maybe doesn't matter?
    3. Do you have a preferred brand of relay?
    4. Would there be any issues grounding both the lights and relay in the same spot? Behind the driver kick panel.
    5. Am I overthinking this and just need to man up and get to work?
    6. Anything I'm missing or overlooking?

    Thanks again!!

The Cargo circuit uses an always ON fuse, so duplicate that. Use an add-a-circuit from any InCab hot fuse, I recommend the sliding roof fuse. (not many have the sliding roof) Fuse size depends on LED's amp requirement, usually not much.

    Example circuit:

Blue wire? The info that I was following, the wire to tap is a green wire in the driver kick panel. I think this is the wire that goes directly to the cargo light.

I also do not have a sun/moon roof.

I'm no electrician, in this wiring you would bridge the 30 and 86 pins? Could be wrong on the terminology.

Here's the info that I was following.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...cted-to-cargo-light-bed-light-circuit.530874/

If you think an add a fuse would be better/easier I could do that to make it easier. This way i wouldn't have to run wire through the fire wall. I dont mind more work as long as its the better/right way that would cause the least amount of problems.

That would be in parallel with cargo lamp. It'll work also.

It's the least to mess with the vehicles system..as you state.."least amount of problems". You can use a DENSO relay to keep with the Toyota hardware.

    Another way:
    upload_2019-6-13_14-10-0.jpg
Auto ON/OFF at approach (smart key), On @ unlock, door open. Once doors are closed and/or locked relay OFF. Then power to added circuit via IGN/ACC fused source.
*For higher amp lamps add switch and wire that can handle the required amps. Wire from 87 to 86 & 85 to violet wire 20~22 awg.

Call me dumb, but I wish I knew how to read this stuff more than I do. I think I understand it......but not confidently enough to speak to it.

there are labels...it shows the cargo light, the wire that feeds to it and its ground. it shows the relay that provides power to the cargo lamp. and on top the fuse that gives the juice (always ON).
    upload_2019-6-13_19-2-24.jpg
Next to it are 2 fuses, one that powers ON with either Ignition or Accessory select depending the source. This is meant to shut down with the vehicle shut down. The other fuse is always ON, in order to provide power to the added relay and lights when the vehicle is unlocked, and doors are opened. Like the bed lamp if the switch is placed in the Door position.
    upload_2019-6-13_19-4-15.jpg
The purple wire is tapped for this to happen on the added light, relay fuse set up. The original circuit (cargo lamp) has a switch that can be OFF, DOOR or ON. The added lamp relay fuse bypasses the switch.

    upload_2019-6-13_19-6-38.jpg
If you add larger amp requiring lamps then it is advised to use a switch that can handle the amps on the fuse that powers up on IGN/ACC.

    upload_2019-6-13_19-9-36.jpg

The wire that comes from pin 85 on the added relay should be small, since it is a "control" wire for the coil on the relay and the violet wire is also a 20 awg one.

I have this out for quoting now. I would probably need at least 20 people to make the cost reasonable. I will probably have these quoted with all black wire with the appropriate labels instead of trying to match the OEM colors.

Another way of adding some puddle/rock lamps:

    upload_2019-7-28_20-45-22.jpg
If left ON the Dome CUT Relay shuts down after 20 min from vehicle is OFF. The tap into the cab illumination power is for the added circuit relay coil, milliamp needed. The Cargo Lamp circuit provides ground to puddle/rock relay. Unlock, Door & Off. Added SPDT switch adds Door feature, OFF & ON without Cargo Lamp circuit input.
