That's not terrible. Figure with a 4 gallon reserve that's for 15 gallons, so you're about 335 miles to empty on the entire tank.

I agree with "schocks" that's pretty good. Now add a steel bumper, full roof rack, winch, expedition gear, full armor....now we'll dip down into the 235-245 miles before the light comes on (mixed city/hwy) with a heavy foot.

Damn, I really need to look into this. Other than a light bar and 33's, I am only getting close to 200 a tank. Mixture of city and highway.

well...it also depends on grade of fuel too and time of year (winter blend). I notice a dramatic drop during the winter timeframe. Premium get's me more miles and performance (at least it makes my brain say vroooom!).

Yeah winter fuel sucks I run 93 and have seen a drop as well. But the problem is the running cooler than it should keep that idle just a tick higher than it should if I remember operatining temp is 180 to 200 and the weak thermostat is keeping it at 150 degrees try it cheap fix can't hurt anyway.

I was getting close to 200 before the winter hit anyways. Definitely going to try to do this an a simple tune up when I get back to my FJ.

I don't like being the guy that revives old threads. But I'm sure there are lots of newbs and new owners here. I've only driven a hand full of full tanks. When I test drove the car. I did notice a deep hum. And I asked the seller if he had a magnaflow or aftermarket exhaust. He said no. I stumbled across this thread and decided to change my thermostat. My mpg was very inconsistent before I changed the thermostat. 1st tank after purchase only got 10.5 mpg. Then I got 14.5. 3rd I got 12. My first full tank after the thermostat change got me 16mpg. If I get any worst or more I'll post again. Hard to say it was the thermostat that did it. May just be more inconsistentcy. Just thought I'd share. mainly city driving btw. I was also on the freeway for a good 60 Miles so that for sure boosted the mpg

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
I would be intrested hearing your findings after you have driven it now for a couple more months.
My truck for certain is getting bad gas mileage. However, I also think my fuel filter is clogged as it’s ahowing signs of a fuel pick up issue of some kind.

Sad to say that I jumped the gun on my post. 1 good tank after I replaced the thermostat. But all tanks afterwards have averaged 13.5 to 14.5. which i think is bad. All city driving though. Current job has me local streets. I spoke to other FJ owners and they all average more. What are you getting and what were you getting before our issue?

I have a 2014 fj since new. My friends have a ‘10 and ‘08 FJ. 14 mpg city driving is normal, and most of us usually get 13 on average. 17mpg at 70mph if no head wind. These things are bricks and take some juice to get moving.

I figured 14mpg is good for being a beast. I wasn't complaining. Guess I should've known better than to listen to others and their unrealistic mpg stories. I drove a ridgeline before and only got 12mpg. 12 mpg for a truck that's not even a truck is bad. So glad I got rid of that junk. I don't know if I mentioned before my tires are 33s. Im sure that helps a little with mpg dropping.

Are you in a state with winter formulated gas? If so your mileage will go up late spring when they switch to summer blend. Here in Ca it can make your mpg swing by a couple.

This is a little off the MPG topic, but thought I would ask to see if anyone has an idea.
    I picked up
An FJ not too long ago in trade, and I am noticing the following. Sometimes the FJ has a harder time starting than other times. It doesn’t want to crank up immediately. Sometimes it will just turn over quick...it’s strange.
The other thing I experience is that, when I push down on the pedal (let’s say I push down to accelerate, as in push down the pedal a bit more or even if I floor it) the FJ lurches a bit.
It’s not a smooth acceleration, if feels as though I am fluttering the pedal but I am not. Seems to be a fuel filter thing, like the truck is being starved of gas.
    Thoughts?

So that one went right over my head. Care to elaborate?
