One of my favorites is when the bear climbs the tree and is sniffing the back of the kids head while his friend tries to shoo him away. Although I’d crap my pants if that was me.

Back in the '80s, almost all hunting videos - archery and turkey at least - actually were somewhat teaching videos!!! Where to put a stand, how and when to rattle or call a turkey etc. Most deer kills were ones that NONE of today's "stars" would even consider shooting. Really helped me in my early archery and turkey hunting days. Now they are just KILLS instead of the hunting/teaching part itself.

I personally know Ben Rising, who used to (or maybe still does) subcontract with Druery Outdoors. Years ago he killed a massive 9 point with his bow in NE Ohio. Thought the world of this hunt until I heard he leased out 200 acres and kept all others but him out. Druery always advertised 'fair chase' - that is not fair chase in my mind.

Haven't watched any hunting shows in years. Roger Rothaar (spp?) was honest at least: Bowhunting a farm in central Ohio for a monster 8 point; farmer directs him to a stand and tells him the buck REGULARLY enters the field from a point at a certain time every day; he is in the stand and sees a 10 point and forgets what the farmer told him about the 8 point; realizes too late and sees the 8 point walk out of range. Next day he is more aware of time and kills the 8 point when and where he was told it would be. Now for the honesty part: He tells the audience what the farmer had told him - where to hunt (stand was in place), where to watch and what time to be ready. He says "All I had to do was get in the stand and be ready.....the farmer did all the work, all I had to was shoot".

Sorry, but that isn't hunting, that is just killing, which almost all of todays shows seem to be about - pay the big $$$ to hunt on controlled access property where all you have to do is make the kill shot, the guides did all the prep work for you.

    Rant over.

I agree with all of this except the part about leasing 200 acres not being hunting. I have no problem with someone leasing land and keeping people out. I only hunt public but if I had that option I would do it and not think twice. As long as there is no high fence.
There is a guy that has a high fence hunting area around his house that borders some land I hunt. He claims it's 160 acres but looks more like 80. You place an order for the size deer you want then go shoot it. I guess bragging right are worth thousands to some people.
Here are some pics I took from the other side of his fence.

1.Set stand up on your side of fence. 2. Place pile of corn on your side of fence. 3. Cut large hole in fence and shoot big buck when he passes through fence. 4. Hang deer on wall. 5. Tell neighbor, really I don’t know how that hole got there.:rofl:

I agree with you. I have no problem leasing land and controlling who is allowed to hunt. I don't do that myself currently but I'm looking at land right now to lease. I hunt public and family owned land.

I don't necessarily have a problem with leasing hunting rights - lots of hunters can't afford to, including me - it is calling that 'fair chase'. Fair chase to me means, it is you against everything else that can happen, expected or unexpected. Having hunted public land for 50 years, you never know when someone else will mess up your opportunity, which is the real world for most people, I think. Same with passing on lesser bucks to allow them to get trophy size. On public land, if I don't shoot a legal buck, there is a good chance the next hunter will.

Again, not saying leasing or managing for trophies is wrong, but it isn't a reality on MOST public lands.

Wow am I glad I found this thread.

I used to shoot back in the day, but stopped in high school.

I'm looking to get back into target shooting but holy hell has archery become super complicated and crazy now.

    Where do I begin!?

exactly, most the shows i dont even watch because they are advertising something more than the show. I watched this one show where the guy sat there and waited on this animal "taking in nature" and not pulling the trigger. While I enjoy being out in the woods when its kill time its kill time!

yeah, thats common here. We have lots of public land but lots of hunters too. We almost had an incident where some idiots tried shooting over our heads because we parked our quad and sneaked in by the treeline and they were on quads sitting on the road waiting for something to come out with their stupid quad running! WTH!

I would try to find a reputable archery shop in your area and start from there. Good luck and enjoy!

When I started bow hunting back in the mid-70’s I could hunt just about anywhere I wanted. Over the years hunting has become a super commercialized mega industry. It’s no longer help yourself to my deer because they’re destroying my crops, now it’s how much you gonna pay me to hunt. This will eventually be the death of future hunters coming up.
