That's where the MSRRA comes into play. The way I understand it is this protects me from having to change my state of residence.

One thing I cannot stress more as advice from someone who got out, knowing what I know now.

Get copies of all of your medical records. ALL OF THEM.

Enroll in school immediately, get the Post 9/11, the income difference will be very noticeable if you don't. Get with a VSO, and file any claims if you have issues before you get out. If you decide to buy a home once you get out, if you are 10 percent the VA waives the shitty funding fee. If you take a break from life for too long after service, i found it much harder to get my shit together, personally, so dont do that lol.

If you don't have a job lined up, there are tons of companies that will hire you, You fall into the recently separated veteran category, which can help you get hired. If you need any advice just let me know.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I don't plan on going to school because I hate it, but in my field, with my experience and qualifications, finding a contracting job should be a piece of cake. Especially because I already numerous friends that have already got out who can get my foot in the door. Just got my resume written and as soon as it's approved I'll start getting myself out there.

I mean, I already have the domain name lol Depending on the kind of house we get and if I have a nice workshop, I'd love to expand my fabrication tools so I can be the go to person for people needing work done in the area. Hanging out in the thread for the area it sounds like there isn't shit down there.

Man, that’s my old stomping grounds before moving out to Komkiefornia.

I lived in Old town which is really fucking close to Ports Naval and is a really nice area to live in. A few good dives to grab a beer and grub and in the 3 years there not a single thing occurred to my rig or my place. Venture past High street or Effingham and you’re risking it.

Western branch and Churchland aren’t too bad an area to reside.

I'll definitely hit you up if I have any specific questions about where and where not to live. I was at norfolk naval base for 3 years but didn't venture over into portsmouth too much.

Old towne is nice. Lots of old places there and rent wasn’t too bad for me. $1k for a 2 bed 2 bath place. Needed a parking permit but for military it’s like $6 a year and you can get that down at the end of Crawford by the pavilion.

I would advise against parking on Dinwiddie or court street last Glasgow towards the water in high tide and heavy rain as the streets get flooded

    ^^THIS
    and ^^THIS!

I'm sure the IRS regs have something to say about changing/adopting state residency, but you also need to look at the laws of the state. It doesn't matter where you live for FED taxes, but each state decides how to apply their rules for military and their dependents. You might try the Turbo Tax or Hewitt forums, or talk to one of there tax accountants. They'd probably have better info.

If I were in your shoes, I would make whatever change you're going to make before your ETS date. You want your DD214 to have the correct state on it. Whether it's Komiforina, Florida, Virginia. I ran into some difficulty when I left Washington moving to Tennessee. I knew I was going to be moving, but not till a few months after my ETS. I didn't think anything about it then, but when got to TN and decided to go back to school I had to fight to get the in-state resident rate, as they used the address on my DD214, to a house I didn't even own anymore, as my address for residency. I was able to appeal the decision and won. Though if I had any foresight I would have listed my families address in TN. It would have saved me a number of headaches later. Also if it were me, I would not list Komifornia as your state of residence unless you really like the place and plan to go back. Otherwise, I'd go become a FL resident or wherever state it is your planning to end up in when the whirlwind that is military life is over and you're both retired before ETS.

whatever your drivers license state is, that is your residency as far as civilians go. Military you can have dual residency regardless of what state your drivers license is while active.

For Civilians, most states require residency for 12 mo before you qualify for any state residency benefits. Such as tax breaks on a home, or in-state tuition rate for school.
