Too expensive, not at all practical (the originals were), too hard to work on. It will die in a year or two.

I was excited when I first heard about a new Supra. Right or wrong I am from the “fast and furious” era. The movie came out right as I came into driving age. I was hooked on all cars period and working on them from then on. I know times change and if we expect new cars after basically 20 years of being gone to be the same as the old then I suppose we are flawed in our thinking right up front. That’s what I believe most fans want to see and hope for, a big turbo’s straight six that you can turn up to 10 to make the legends of the past come life in the present with new technology. I can’t help but get nostalgic when I think of 90’s cars as that’s the era I grew up in most influenced by that generation NSX, 300ZX, SUPRA, GTR, RX-7 and the likes. I had this same feeling when the new NSX was announced, just overwhelmed with joy to see what they could bring to build upon the legacy of a car that was way ahead of its era at the time. As with many I was let down hard, it was just too modern, too exotic, way out of reach for most of diehard fans of what that car was, simple and fast. Overdone is how I would describe the new one. Amazing car non the less, but not at all what I fell in love with back in the day.. Now we have this Supra.. I don’t doubt it will perform great.. But Automatic only, BMW in its veins. I have never owned a BMW but I can’t throw a rock in any direction without hitting someone with some horror story on maintenance cost and reliability issues. I can’t understand why Toyota would take a legendary car and sub it out to someone else to build when they seemed to have all the tools even many years ago to build an epic car.. Even if I had the money I don’t think I could bring myself to buy one.. Id rather spend 50k on a gen 4. This is just not a Supra anymore; it’s a BMW with different sheet metal. I think the reality that I need to face is that those greats of the past are gone. I’m sure it’s a similar feeling to those folks who grew up with the muscle cars of the 60-70’s .. How long did it take for them to make “good” American muscle cars again? A Long time and they are changed as well. It’s a new day and a new generation and they have to keep up with the times as much as I wish they would hold on to the past like I have..

I lost my enthusiasm for the Fast and Furious movies after the first movie showed the Rx-7 rotary engine spinning backwards.

I knew from that moment that the scientific and practical aspects of the movie could be suspect :p

As far as the new Supra, I think Toyota and BMW both may regret this joint venture.

The Toyota guys will see the Toyota version as a possibly unreliable and over-engineered panzerwagen nightmare.

The BMW guys will see the BMW version as "just a lowly Toyota" that will fail to impress the people they don't know at Starbucks.

The more I look at the photos, the more it looks like a Subaru BRZ/Toyota FRS on steroids.

Well, now that I look at them side by side, I think the Subaru looks a bit better.

I agree that watching F&F now I laugh at all the errors and just flat out ridiculousness but at the time it sparked the urge to go fast and stand out. I owned a BRZ and it was a great little car, I consider it a driver’s car, a lot of people complain about the Subaru motor which I agree is slightly under powered but the car is a balanced beauty to drive.. Still simple relatively light and easy to throw around a turn, just all around fun to drive.. I am also a Subaru fan so the motor didn't bother me as much as some. What they should have done was just stick a better power plant in the BRZ and called it a day.. Is say its closer to the days of old than this new Supra..

I honestly think it’s going to be a flop. The lines on the car are horrible looking and let’s not start with a bmw engine. The 2jz was a masterpiece. If cannot improve upon the old platform why bother. If you’re in the market for a car like this the Zl1 is untouchable. Double the power with a bullet proof engine and transmission.

I had a Celica ST in the early 80's and really enjoyed it. My first 5sp. Wanted a Supra. Heck I wanted the GT but couldn't afford it. I do kinda like the look of it but I am not excited about the BMW part of it. To me, that means high cost and lots of maintenance. Then I saw the estimated starting price: $50,000..... I will stick with the reliable, fun and affordable adventures of the Tacoma.

It's fugly and doesn't come in manual. If someone were to give me one, I'd probably swap in a 2JZ engine and tranny, and a MKIV supra front end.

Power? The power 20 years ago was 320. Whats this like 335? Doesn't impress me at all. In today's sports car market if your under 400 you aint got SH%T..Not to mention I guarantee this BMW motor can't make 800+ on the STOCK BLOCK like the old 2JZ's could...
