trans temp??

Im alittle disappointed by the lack of temperature gauges in the 3rd gen and was wondering if anyone had an aftermarket unit displaying trans temp, exact engine temp ext.

 

Transmission temp can be monitored using Scangauge II

Trans temp gauge would be nice along with an oil pressure gauge. Don’t understand why they can’t a least give ya an oil pressure gauge.

 

or even having the option to scroll through the In dash screen to find a digital readout like most trucks

 

Oil pressure and oil temperature would be awesome on my Ultragauge ... the Tacoma might only have a low threshold oil pressure switch and not one that continuously outputs the pressure ...

Get a full size if you want those. Most Tacoma buyers are college chicks and soccer dads who don't even know what oil pressure means.

No need for Toyota to spend money on stuff they get no return on

Several options to monitor this. Scangauge already mentioned is a good one, but I use Torque Pro on Android. If you are an apple user they have one I think its called OBD fusion.

 

Use OBD2 reader with OBD Fusion app and the Toyota expansion pack (make your own electronic dashboard), monitor on a tablet... below is my towing dashboard for the iPad:

 

Even when they put the gauge in the dash it is basically a dummy light with a needle. I had a trans temp gauge in my 2012 sequoia. I also ran a scan gauge. The temp would swing 40-50 degrees and get to the point that I was uncomfortable @210 but the trusty gauge said it was all the same, never moved from the regular position. Scangauge is the way to go

 

I can tell you the trans temp will run between 195-210*F.

I pinned the thermostat on mine and it stays 145-155*F now.

 

How did you pin the thermostat? Any pictures? Thank you

 

I'd love to out how to do this too.

 

Believe you need the tow package, but you just push in the thermostat and put a small nail in it to hold it open.

Keeps temps low. Mine doesn’t get above 160*F on the highway.

Do some research and decide if it’s worth it for you or not, but I like my trans to run below 180*F if possible.

The stock thermostat is programmed to open/close to keep the trans temp between 195-210*F at all times.

Pinning it you run the risk of never getting to operating temp or taking very long to get there. Varies based on climate of course but unless you live in AZ or some desert hell hole I wouldn’t do it. Even so, only in the summer

 

Like I said, do your own research. “Operating temp” for Toyota is ~190*F. That’s too hot. The “lifetime” fluid eventually breaks down, and the constant high temps accelerate that process.

I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but I have mine pinned so the trans runs cooler at all times, again 150-160*F. I monitor it with OBD Fusion.
