Installation/upgrade to navigation in a base model reg. cab

This will be the write-up of how I installed factory navigation into my base model truck.

Are there cheaper ways of doing this? Yes.
Are there easier ways of doing this. Yes.
Why not just go aftermarket? Because I didn't want to.
Was it hard to find parts? Somewhat.

I'm presently getting pictures organized so I can post the full write-up.

I have a 2012 base model Tacoma, it has DRL's and that's about it. I wanted navigation so I started reading the threads on this and other forums. Learned a lot about what parts are out there and what others have done. I finally found a navigation head unit from a 2014 Tacoma for sale on this forum. 2014 was important for me because that's when Toyota moved the image for the backup camera from the rear view mirror to the head unit.

I'll try to answer questions the best I can but remember, there are slight differences between different years and option packages for these trucks.

 

This will be where I post pictures and tell you what I have done.

Bought a PT546-00120-CH and modified it by moving a couple wires around. The small connector is where the microphone (PT546-NU160) plugs into. The larger connector is where the 20 pin that's in my truck will plug in. The largest connector (28 pin) plugs into the head unit.

Bought 10 different colors of 18 ga. wire. Waiting for that to arrive. I'm still going to hook everything up temporarily to make sure it works like it should.

It will be 100% complete when I install my new dash, old one is scratched.

I got everything working today. Navigation/EnTune/XM/backup camera.

 

I was able to use double sided tape to attach both antennas to the top of the radio. XM and GPS signals are good.

Modified the USB connector cable to accept the USB cable from the Scion.



Found a spot to get IGN (it's not shoved in there, I used a terminal/wire from Toyota)



Updating the radio to the latest.

When you buy a replacement radio and it has EnTune and you want to use it, you will need a VIN from a truck with the EXACT same radio.

You can either get it from the person that sold you the radio or do what I did and look for a used truck online and get the VIN from the ad.

 

I am in literally the exact same situation. Just bought a 2012 base. Picking up same 2014 head unit as you tomorrow. I had no idea this was so involved. Hoped it would be more plug and play...

 

The radio will work and that's about it. To get anything else working, you have to do some work. Don't even try pairing your phone. With no microphone installed, it won't let you.

My current set up does have Bluetooth and phone connectivity. Also have steering wheel controls for radio controls and phone. Do i need a different microphone to work with new setup?

 

No.
What radio do you have and what radio do you want to use?
The microphone wiring should be part of the 28 pin connector.

 

Got the lines working
With a 2014 radio you need a 2014 camera and harness for the tailgate.

The existing radio has a 20 pin and a what looks to be a 12 pin.

You will need an antenna adapter like this:



Or you can do what I did and replace the antenna cable from the radio to the A-pillar, part number 86101-04030
You don't need the blue wire that's in the adapter, either de-pin it or tape it out of the way.

You will have to see if your truck has a Multimedia Interface ECU, that's the part that does USB for the old radio. Looks like the radio has the correct plug (12-pin). The ECU in question is to the right of the glove box.

 

These two connectors plug into the 20-pin adapter and the adapter plugs into the new radio (28 pin).

 

Small update. I'll have to fab up a bracket for the GPS and XM antennas. The GPS seems to be working fine but the XM works 50% of the time (looses signal probably due to antenna placement).

Used double sided tape to attach the antennas to the underside of the dash. XM still cuts out. Maybe a better antenna?

 

Another small update. The satellite radio cuts out way too much, enough where I don't even listen to it which sucks 'cause I'm paying for it.
I found a part number for a low profile XM antenna that fits a 2009-2011 Corolla and it's white, like my truck. It may even be super-white.
I'm guessing that where the antenna is currently mounted and the way the windshield isn't sloped back like on a car, the roof blocks most of the signal getting to the antenna. If I'm driving South, the reception is better.

This means that I will have to drill two holes in the roof. I'm not worried about leaks, I'm worried about rust.

 

Looking to do the same upgrade, how did you grab the back up camera signal and how did you get the lines on the screen? Im sure I'll have more questions once my HU gets here. thx
