looking to get away from xfinity’s Rental fee and get myself a new modem/router. But I have no clue what I’m looking for, here’s what I have on my WiFi, smart tv, Xbox, Apple TV, printer, as well as 2 iPhones and an ipad. My current internet speed is 250mpbs and the house I live in is roughly 1500 square feet.

I'm in the same boat. On Xfinity's site is a list of approved routers along with an explanation of the process to register.

Yeah I received a letter from them the other day telling me about their approved list. I’m trying a few things out before I make any rash moves.

Just buy your own router from the approved list. I have one from my cable providers approved list and avoid their rental fee since I started.
    I have a zoom router

Honestly just either go to best buy and hope the guy there is a computer nerd or go to cnet and look up their reviews. New routers come out all the time 6 months later they are "old tech". But I think as long as you buy a decent one it will out perform the one you are leasing. But anything i buy electronic wise I look at the reviews on cnet.com they are usually pretty detailed.
