Are you planning on having or currently have stable employment before you move out or is this a Cosby Show episode?

By this I mean if you really want to do this stay living with your parents for awhile and save money as if you were paying bills while working and living at home with mom and dad. If everything goes well for a few months then take the plunge. This way you won't be getting yourself into a situation that may be difficult to get out of.

Not true- There are non-derogatory look-ups (like those pre-approved offers don't ding you- the annual credit reports I was talking about before are the same...)
If you try to get a ton of store brand cards or lots of loans or whatever...Then it's bad.

I would reccomend getting a membership (or seeing if you can get on your moms if she has one) for one of your local bulk stores (Sams Club, Costco etc.) They are good when buying things like toilet paper, cleaning supplies and even groceries if you have the room to keep it from going bad.

Also, I reccomend getting a george foreman grille.. They are great. I used to buy a bag of frozen skinless boneless chicken breasts, and keep it in the freezer (like 10$ / bag). You can take one breast out and put it in a sink of warm water in a ziplock bag to thaw it out in about 30 minutes. Then stick it on the george foreman for about 5 minutes (make sure it is not pink on the inside, but don't overcook!).. You can season it with mccormick seasoning rubs or something like that.. Mix it with one of the cheap pasta packages and a can of green beans or corn or something... there ya go dinner for a night or two for like 4$.. Also, hamburger and chicken helper are fast easy and cheap.. If you want to know any more easy / cheap recipies feel free to PM me! Good luck :D

Set up a RRSP and put in an amount you can afford per month , do not stop contributing , you will be 65 one day and the sooner you start you will get a huge advantage with compounding interest .

Even if you can afford $25 a month it will add up .

For our US brothers the RRSP is a :canada: retirement fund deal .

    Learn the word no...

When friends want to go places and you are running low on funds, say no. I do it... I am never late on bills and we always have money. Some of the friends do not.

Unless it's specific to New Brunswick and I misunderstood the banker I talked to what I said holds true for us up here.

CarsOn' : your best bet is to speak to someone at your bank about this issue. Either way you're too young and unless you've been building up credit since you're 13 you still have a way to go.

Pay your stuff on time and it'll only get better.

Learn how to cook in bulk. Freeze that shit and have it for 3 meals. Pasta sauce works well in this case cause pasta itself takes 10 minutes to make tops.

Hit up the Costco and buy all your meat there. Put those fuckers in ziplock bags of 2. Defrost them both and cook both. Make dinner for 2 and then you have lunch for tomorrow.

When in doubt, undercook something...you can always throw it back on the heat to bring it up to palatability.

You can't throw something that's over cooked back in the freezer to uncook it.

Learn to use spices, they make the massive difference between bland shit food and tasty delicious food.
And learning to cook will get you pussy. Trust me.

Use your credit cards for gas and groceries. Never spend anything on the credit card that you could NOT use your debit card on.

You need to build credit to get anything in this life. Credit cards can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Using them builds credit. Over using them builds grief and insomnia.

Save up enough money for 3 months worth of bills, groceries and gas. Never presume you'll have a job. (I did that and almost lost my truck. Thank god I had RRSPs to draw on...)

The only helping hand in life is the one at the end of your arm. Use it.

There has been a lot of really solid financial and responsibility information in here, and I'd echo every bit of it. Everything in moderation, and save save save. Not sure about tax implications up there, but look into learning how stocks and other financial instruments work. If you don't know who Dave Ramsey is, he's worth checking out. I'm not saying all he says is gold, but he has good advice for the most part.

I'll add the personal side. Keep in touch with your friends. It's more difficult after college, but the ones you keep around will probably be friends for life. I'm continually grateful for the pals I have that I still hang out with, but it's a smaller list than it was 10 years ago. I had a buddy lose a close friend a couple of days ago, and it kinda puts things in perspective. You can't ever have too many friends.

Oh and never skimp on quality cooking gear. That shit will last even your grandchildren. Don't buy cutco, they aren't worth the money no matter how good they are. Henckels and Wustoff knives are excellent and are good quality for what you get. Just make sure you get the ones from Germany, not the ones from China. Lagostina is the same for pans.

Winners is your BEST FRIEND for cooking gear. Quality stuff...dumb dumb prices. I bought a Henckels knife that would normally be 80-90 moose bucks for $35. Small imperfection near the heel of the knife. Doesn't effect the performance at all.

Good kitchen gear makes cooking easy and enjoyable. Nothing sucks more than using a shitty pan with a dull knife on a cutting board full of garbage.

And if you're gonna hit, wrap that little thing up. You're too young to be having an 18 year car payment....
