Will 20% tint give me problems at night?

Also, on our 4Runner, I had him do 15% on the front windows and just use whatever he needed to to match the rears. It's been good so far, I have zero issues with visibility.

Yeah if you want them to match that would be close. Usually tint shops can get it to match pretty close if that's what you want. On ext cabs, I've always been a fan of the back windows being darker for security purposes. This way I can keep items more out of sight and less likely to provoke a break in.

On my 2000 I had, I got 15% on the front and also on top of the stock tint. This made the rears close to 5%. I liked that set up alot.

I also had a '99 that I had 5% done all around including over the rear factory tint. That was dark AF! The rears were close to 0% LOL

I've got 35 on the front and something like 10-15 on the back/rear. Having the back darker will make the 35 up front seem darker IMO.
However, i live in New England where its often cloudy and rainy, etc. In strong sunlight I sometimes wish I had 20. Never had an issue at night though unless my limo tint cap is on.

(overcast photo example with my setup)

Good Point. Regional location definitely makes a big difference. Here in NM, we get sunlight 90% of the year. So 5% is pretty common here.
@HSmith_11 Keep that in mind as well when you decide

With 20%, it is difficult to see when making a turn onto an unlit street. I have it on my truck and car... i do love it at all other times tho. If i was in the country alot i wouldn't go so dark....

I'm pretty sure 20% would be good for my fronts. I'm mainly just trying to decide what I want with my rears. Also, what did you get do with the window on the very back? And I'm in VA, so I'm probably in the middle as far as weather conditions.

For the very back I've done just OEM tint, 5% on top of OEM tint, and 15% on top of OEM tint. I liked the 15% on top of OEM tint the best.

I also read somewhere that someone suggested to buy some super cheap tint and decently apply it yourself. This would allow you to "test" it before you actually pay for the good stuff. Thoughts?

You can but then you have to remove the old tint. Tint shops will charge you more for this. My guy charges about $50. You can try to black trash bag trick to do this if needed. Just google it.
Back in High School I tried tinting my windows on a '85 Ranger with the help of a friend. It came out like crap and when I went to have it professionally done, it was a bitch to remove b/c the cheap stuff uses crappy adhesives.

What about static cling tint. I heard it has no adhesive so I would have to worry much about removable. Of course it would be crappy but it would give me a rough idea while being cheap. I would probably only keep it for a day or two.

That could work. The only thing is you need to do all the windows to really see the full effect of the tint. If you just do one window, the effects will be partially negated by light coming in through the others.

I'll definitely do at least the front two

I got around to trying the static cling tint. I’ll start off by saying that it was only $10 so it was definitely worth it. The tint is super blurry and pretty blue. On the inside, it’s kinda annoying to look out the sides because of the blurriness. However, the darkness was no problem. It looks much better from the outside and definitely gave me a good idea of what my truck would look like if I actually got real tint.

With that being said, I’m for sure sticking with 20% on the front, but I’m trying to decide whether or not I want to tint over the oem windows in the back. I got a quote from a local guy that does tinting and he would charge $70 for the front or $150 for the whole truck. My current thought is to just get the front done for now and add the rear later if I want it. Finally, is his price decent?

Sounds like a fair price. My guy would normally charge $50 and $120 for that. But he’s also self employed and runs his shop on the same property as his house. So he has a lot less overhead.

This guy is also a smaller business. He might have a building at this point though.
    Thanks!

I had my truck done last month 5 windows for $175.00. I have 20% on the front 2 and 35% over the factory privacy glass on the back 3. They all match perfect as the tint guy put the meter on them when he was finished. And it showed 14% VLT (visible light transmission) which is illegal here in Illinois. LOL

My truck has 20% tint and it is hard to see the curbs at night sometimes.

I have limo tinted my vehicles for years, night visibility is definitely affected. Love the daytime darkness and privacy tho

Yes, 20% tint will give you issues at night, but it is really nice to have on bright sunny days.

I probably won't tint my recently purchased Tacoma because the night driving with 20% really did annoy me on my previous vehicle, and I honestly don't think 35% makes a big enough difference for me.
