I went with stock size SL, noise difference and MPG differences are barely noticeable.

Not a fan. Went with a P rated wild peak and a rock punched through the tread leaving an inch gash inside the tire. No patching that. I was twenty miles away from Lake City, CO in American Basin. Drove to Grand Junction, ripped the remaining three wild peaks off the truck (less than 500 miles on them) and bought some 275/70r17 KO2 E rateds. Yeah mpg sucks with a heavier tire, but I'd rather not be trying to change a tire on a steep incline east of the middle of nowhere. I've ran Duratracs and KO2s in C and E ratings for over ten years and have never experienced a rock punching through the tread like that. I guess the wild peaks looked cool though? Shop I bought them from basically laughed at me when I asked if they could do anything.
Anyway, got 3 265/70r17 for sale! Low miles.

Maybe you just hit the tire at the right angle to cause the puncture. Lots of variables in this case. Other than the unfortunate puncture. How did they compare to the Duratracs/KO2s?

    This.

I've wheeled the same trails. with DuraTracs (C and E) , KOs KO2s, the stcok kevlar crap that came on this truck, Cooper STs.

Only tire I tore up, was the KO2.

However, THAT said, how and where you wheel, should play an important factor in your tire purchase.

That's likely what happened. I hit it just right (wrong?). Small rock though- I hadn't even reached any technical stuff yet. Just a USFS road in the ROCKY Mountains.
I prefer the Duratracs over the wildpeak. A similar amount of noise. Duratracs seemed to wear a little more uneven vs. the KO2, but anecdote doesn't equal data. The P rated wildpeak (somewhat obviously) rides a bit better than both other tires- but we're talking P rated vs. E rated so that makes sense. I'll probably stick with a KO2 from now on, but I wish I had a C rated. I feel like that's the sweet spot.

Agreed, to a point. While you can get away with wheeling a P rated tire for a while, you're probably asking for trouble at some very inconvenient point. After experimenting with load ranges, I think a C rated is probably the best compromise.

I was also probably going a wee bit fast... I like to have fun.

    Agreed.

I stuck with the 116 rating(112 stocker) Yes. Its still 4ply. Majority of the usage is regular surface roads. Some fire roads, etc. Not a lot of places to wheel around here. Was more due to the fact I have a dirt/mud drivewzay, and the stock kevlars are crap.

That said, I also made that purchase, knowing I was getting another set of tires specifically for wheeling, KM2/3s, etc. Thinking in the 255/85 range. Not lifted, and not planning to anything soon.

Like I said, the type of usage should dictate tire choice.

Man - This is frustrating. Have an SR5 with springs, Bilstein 5100s all around with the front on the 3rd setting (~1.6' lift over stock to level). Looking at a 16x8 0 offset 4.5 bs wheel. The frustrating part is I'd like to go 285/75 but not confident it'd fit. Anyone run this combo? No lift to speak of in the rear with the 5100s but I don;t see that as being a issue.

I have an sr5 with 5100's on the stock setting and OME 887 springs, about 2-2.5 inches. I have 16x8 3.5 bs SCS F5's, if you run 285/75s it's recommended that you have a lower offset to get the tire away from the control arm. You can chop the cab mount and trim fenders... but not the UCA. lol. Currently on 265/75 toyo MT's. I'm getting 285/75 at3w's put on this week and I'll let you know how it does. TRD PRO guys run 285's stock with no issues on the street, but i'd assume they rub when stuffed offroad. Just my .02, hope it helps. With only 1.6" of lift, you'll probably want to do a CMC if you do anything other than light offroading. But on the street you should be fine, trimming the inner fenders is easy... I'd definitely go with at least a -20 offset.

Edit: This dude says its fine for crawling malls... "Almost no rub"
    Stock height 285/75/16.

Almost no rub  - saw that HAHA

Thanks for the input. I have the stock springs currently and have plans to add the OMEs down the line. Makes sense more neg offset could help - it'd be great too hear how things turn out for you. Only off roading we do is to some outdoor ranges we like to shoot at and MTB trails to hit so we don't need a lot. I do like the bigger contact patch either way.

To avoid any headaches, you could just go 265/75. It's not that big of a difference, and you can get non-LT tires that wont impact your MPG. The 265 tires I'm currently on weigh more than most 285's though (61lbs) , which is why i have no problem getting rid of them. Most guys on 60lb tires get around 16mpg. I've been managing 18.5 somehow, but i'd still prefer a lighter tire.

Just mounted my 285's definitely need a CMC even for just the street. Rubs like a slammed car now... lol. Kinda thought I could get away without a CMC for a little while if I avoided wheeling. Definitely not the case.

I’m needing input- I have a 09 dcsb w/ OmE 886:90000 & HD Dakar’s in the rear along with high clearance front bumper- Question will I be able to fit 285/75/16 Falken at3w without CMC?

Whats the best pricing you guys have seen lately on these tires? Ebay has them for 476 shipped.. Seems about the lowest I have came across.. (265/70/17)

Bilstein 6112 front, 5100's rear with blocks, camburg UCA, 17" XD's with 285/70/17 AT 3's and a blackout front grille.
Is it really dangerous to put a 255/80/17 tire on a 9 inch rim? The website says "approved rim sizes 6.5-8.5". I want to move to a larger tire and I am sold on these falken wildpeaks, but if I go 285's im looking at CMC and a bunch of work. Currently running 265/70/17's.
