My 2010 4 cyl manual Taco didn't come with cruise, so I purchased a cruise control switch for the steering wheel along with the proper wiring including the ground wire.

The “Cruise” light on the dash lights up when I turn the cruise on but won’t keep the speed when I drive because I am missing the clutch switch.

So I purchased the clutch “switch” and looked everywhere under my dash for the “clutch plug” however I cannot locate it. I was under my dash for the last two weeks and believe me, I looked and searched “everywhere” and I just can't find it.

So I purchased a clutch switch/cruise wiring kit (see pic below) from a fellow on eBay and I’m having difficulty understanding the Rostra 5188F PDF instructions he suggested I use here as a guide for installing the wiring kit.

    CruiseWires.jpg

So I decided to FIRST see if the clutch/cruise wiring existed based on the Rostra clutch/cruise instructions and I found the following:
    1. The cruise ECM and Ground wires behind the steering wheel (PIN 1 and PIN 2) were installed by the factory (on page 5 - Figure 18)

      Figure18.jpg

    2. The cruise ECM harness wiresE7 - behind the glove box were also installed by the factory (PINS 21, 18 and 31Page 9 – Figure 35)

      E7.jpg

    3. I did not remove my instrument panel to locate the white connector (C9 – Page 8) at the combination meter to see if there is a “cruise indicator light” wire was installed by the factory in PIN 24. I’m assuming it is installed because the light appears on the dash when I turn on the cruise.
So, at this point it looks like all the necessary clutch/cruise wiring was installed by the factory.
Now, since I cannot locate the clutch plug under the dash, I would like to see if I could use the “NEW” clutch plug wire” in the kit I purchased, and “tap" Into the existing wiring so I can use the new wire to connect to the clutch switch?

    If this can be done:
    1. where exactly do I connect the green wire to, and ...
    2. where does the purple plug get connected to in order for me to use the new plug?

Thank you so much for any advice anyone can offer.

    Hi,
I did this same thing, Installed Cruise in my 09, base model access cab 4banger
but I had the plug. I know you looked, but I got to think its there, I wish I could remember if it was taped to another harness, I'll see what I can do to have another look at it. mine was tucked up in there that's for sure!, and I remember being on my back, having to use a flashlight to "find" it, then basically re-positioning myself so that I can get my arm up in there feeling around blind. I might have a fat head, but my body could not twist in such a way where I could use my arm and see at the same time.

it was a royal pain to get the switch installed and connected.

    do you need some pictures?

    Hi D2,

Thanks for writing. Yes!!! ... I would LOVE to get pictures of the area/location where you found the plug.

I piggy-backed on to a cruise control thread here and asked where others located their plug .. and folks responded by telling me to look in those areas. Some mentioned that they found it tucked under the rug, so I pressed on the rug (for a bump hoping to find the white plug) at the firewall, where it meets the side wall at the top near the area where the clutch plug is installed, looked near the steering wheel … I removed the lower dash to get a better look, searched the larger harness hoping to find it taped to a harness … I just can't find it. If you count the dozen or so times I've ben under that dash with a bright shop light it would easily exceed an hour. I'd afraid I'm going to jar a wire lose and then something else will go wrong.

So yes .. please provide me a few pics with the location you found the plug and I'll start searching again. Thank you so much!

Knowing that I located the wires above, would it be logical to assume the clutch plug IS under the dash somewhere?

I would think so, They have to run somewhere right?
I'll run out at lunch and see what I can take pics of. I might even have what I did on this forum somewhere, just have to find out where....

Hey D2 .. did you ever take pics of the clutch plug wire location? .. or locate any information you might have posed?

    Thanks!

I tried to take a pic, but I can't seem to get the phone up there at the right angle with the flash to produce anything usefull.

I did however take a look at the plug, Mine's green, and its pretty short. Meaning it can't be that far away from where the switch gets installed.
let me give it the old college try one more time. perhaps 3rd time lucky?

I'll go see if I can get a good picture of where mine was. I believe mine was just wrapped up to the left and up of the clutch.

I'd probably return that kit and just go to a dealer and buy a Toyota upper clutch switch. That is what I did, I don't think it cost much, and all I had to do was install it and snap that wire harness on.

I think it was tucked along the groups of wires in the left of the picture. If I recall correctly it was folded up a few times and taped or zip tied. Man getting in there for that picture reminded me in a hurry what a bitch it was to work in that area.

Edit: After reading the other post on it being short, I may be incorrect about it being folded up and taped. I think you can just make out the wire coming out of there at the top left of the picture.

Hey JeffreyB .. Thanks for the pic .. but I can't tell you how many times I looked in that area (at the top of your pic near the switch) and could not locate the plug for the clutch switch. BTW - I returned the wire kit. I purchased the clutch switch separately and all I need is the plug to plug into the switch.
