Interesting. I'm on the fence between HAM and CB at the moment. Mostly for Trail Comms but also I want to be able to reach out in an emergency if I'm up in the mountains.

Ham can be setup to transmit further than a cb. I’ve hit repeaters over 40 miles away with my mobile. Main thing is the terrain you’ll be in how any setup will work. With trail comms it’s a matter of what the other people use. Cb’s are cheap to add in the truck if you want both. I know around my area if I call an emergency on a repeater someone’s jumping on right then. CB around here would be a toss up. Just depends really on what you want out of the setup. Would you want to reach out and have conversations with people all over the world and local or just want trail comms. I think one or two of the repeaters here are still connected to make phone calls on too.

Also in the mountains unless you’re up high neither one will do much good probably unless there’s someone in the area or with ham if there’s a repeater on top of one of them that covers the valley.

My mobile has a feature called cross and repeat that I can use outside of the truck with my handheld. I transmit with the low powered ht back to the truck and the trucks radio acts as a repeater and sends it out at 50 watts vs the 5 watts the ht puts out. Basically you make your own repeater for yourself.

Sounds like HAM is the way to go. My wife's health can deteriorate in a moments notice, so being able to reach out for medical emergencies is a must.

Keep working operators assist with keeping emergency roads and such open. But you still get paid no matter what.

Seems like the LOTO training gets changed every year. More and more paperwork as well.

50 minutes of documentation for 3 minutes of wrenching.

I lost my shit with a couple tradesmen last week.

These fuckers show up for an unscheduled PM because their boss felt sorry for them because it was -8*f. We will give you some easy inside work.

Meanwhile, I get to do an hour of lockout paperwork for a 10 minute job.

I told them to come back in an hour and I'll have the lockout done.

They told me they had no problem waiting . Wrong! You fuckers are not sitting in my control room playing on your phones while I'm getting this job ready! GO!

They asked why I had to be that way, they were just trying to do their job.

    • I explained how my entire day just got backed up because they showed up for unscheduled work. I was a dick, but at times it's required to make a point.
They did leave for an hour. I was happy.

Why would you do this to me?
