@scottalot what for filter wrench did you use to change the filter on your 4Runner? The video I watched looked like it took a special kind of filter wrench but I didn’t know. Thanks

Get an aluminum to replace the plastic after you remove it!

    @scottalot @Hard Luck GraphiX

    Buy extra filters.

    Per my other half:
I’m never touching the oil on the pos 4Runner again. Who in the flying fuck Mounts a canister filter upside down and has an external o-ring that has to stay in place with prayers. Filter includes a one-time use plastic dongle to drain the canister. I’d sell the runner if it was mine.

I can get the link to the one we have. Or sell you ours since he won’t do any more oil changes for me.

That’s why I have never touched my wife’s because I thought it looked like a pain in the a$$ design. Where did you buy the wrench?

WHY do Tacos need special oil filters?
Are the “classic” cannisters not good enough?
This is going backwards to the days owners changed the filters inside metal cannisters that were reused (See old British Motor Company filters ... ).

I was thinking about cleaning mine. How complicated is it on an RZ motor?

    Might have to.
Since I purchased it new there in 2001, maybe they will treat me a little better.
Going to be a hell of an inconvenience though.

    Per other half:
    Feedback after changing...
Remove drain plug, then insert plastic drain from filter kit to drain filter housing. Will remove o-ring when removed.
Tool will be needed to unthread the cap all the way
Would knock cap out of tool, then reinstall drain plug with new oring before re-installing cap.

Well I can tell ya what I do, and what 99 percent of shops and dealers do, y’all might not like it.

I bought the tool and it works great. I drain the oil from the pan, reinstall the bolt. Then move the drain pan under the filter housing. Use the tool and crack the main housing free. Don’t even bother using the bottom drain with the stick in plug, waste of time and pain in the Ass.

So spin the main house free with the tool just enough so oil starts to slowly seep over that o ring. Grab a Walmart bag, slip over canister and spin it free. Let it drop, the canister, filter and little oil that the filter holds.

Throw filter away, clean off old oil in the housing, parts cleaner is fine. Wipe it out good and clean and install new filter and oring. Install filter and housing and fill with oil .

No mess, no bs messing with that stupid bottom drain. It’s a royal pain to get that lower one loose without spinning the main canister free. For those who are worried I know of a 2011 t4r that has 300k on it and the lower drain has the same oring...

Pretty sure the 3rd gen tacos use the same tool as the t4r. Haven’t changed the oil in my 3rd gen yet but almost positive it’s the same plastic housing size just slightly different filters.

I’m new to these & come from Miatas & Scions.

What’s I’m loving is that parts for these are SO cheap & plentiful in comparison.
I need a new grill- $100, inc. grill, clips, & corner light housings.
My carpet looks dingy & needs a good cleaning. A full replacement- $150.
That is a fraction of what I’m used to seeing.

64mm Toyota oil filter cap. Was 10 bucks prime. No need to for the 20-40 dollar ones.
