    Hi guys!

I just picked up a 2014 Tacoma Regular Cab Base ( 4x4, 5MT ). I've been searching for this truck for a while now so I'm pretty stoked to have finally found it.

In any case, I heard somewhere that our trucks were pre-wired for backup cameras. I popped open the tailgate and there appeared to be a 6-pin connector with 4 wires leading out of it. So I Amazon'd this: http://tinyurl.com/y2matnay

    Photo of connector:

Plugged it in and shoved it in reverse. Nada.

I did an extensive search of your forums and came up with this:

2014 Regular cabs usually came with a 1 wire connector in the tailgate, which means you need to buy the entire 25' harness kit.

2014 Access/Double cabs came with the full tailgate-to-HU harness, including the 4 pin connector in the tailgate.

I have a 4 wire connector on my Reg Cab, though? I'm kind of thinking there might be something missing from cab-side harness to HU? I didn't get a chance to pull the HU to check which plugs were incomplete, though.

Also, for poops and giggles, here's a view of my fuse box. Is there something that's supposed to plug in to the 4 pin connector where my finger is at the bottom?

    Thanks guys!

Following. I have wires to my gate and the screen shows all the backup warnings, but the Amazon listing makes no mention of regular cabs.

Ok so figured something out today. Checked out some of Camera Source's stuff ( they were mentioned on these forums a few times ) and read the description here: https://camera-source.com/2014-16-tacoma-radio-camera-interface-kit.html

I ran outside and double checked UNDER the bumper instead of inside the tailgate and:

So even though there's 4 wires going from the under-the-bumper pigtail to where the camera's supposed to be mounted, the wiring from from the under-the-bumper area to the cab is just a single blue wire.

In any case, I'm going to purchase the Camera Source harness for $40 and go from there.

Ok so in the end. I ended up pretty much purchasing Camera Source's complete kit. I got the harness which didn't work with the OEM camera so I ordered CS's camera kit and returned the OEM one ( the price was pretty much the same ).

The harness I received from CS was kaput but their customer service is outstanding and they actually shipped me a whole new harness+camera kit with a return label for anything I didn't use. I replaced just the harness and started up the truck. No camera still... turns out you need to restart the head unit for it to recognize the camera. So after a restart, voila, finally.

Now that I have a backup camera... I really don't see myself using it all that often haha.

Anyhow, save yourself the headache and just buy a kit from CS. It worked well with my power door lock+pop lock kit.

Oh and the installation isn't difficult. Doesn't require soldering ( but you can, if you're like me, and want everything nice and tidy ) but it does require you to pull your head unit, which isn't as horrible as other cars I've worked on. Plumbing the harness is pretty simple since it's a body-on-frame vehicle. I routed all the wires through the main vehicle harness loom grommet by the brake booster. Make sure you RTV that sucker after you're finished. I think the most confusing part of the installation was figuring out how to insert the trigger wire in to the pin connector on the back of the head unit. Use a pick and make sure you pry up the retaining bar on the pin connector before you insert the pin from the trigger wire. It's all explained in-depth in the instructions that are supplied with the CS kit.

Make sure you select full harness on the drop down menu. I already had this pop and lock kit. Not sure if all pop and lock kits use the same actuator but my only complaint about the kit is that the thing's pretty darn loud. It goes "CLUNK" when you unlock it using your power locks. I had it wired up to a universal 2-door power lock kit I got from Crutchfield.

Also, if anyone's curious about how the system operates. Both doors and tailgate unlock when unlocked with the key or from the inside of the doors. When using the key with tailgate, only the tailgate unlocks while the doors remain in their original state.

I had an issue with my Isuzu Trooper when I put power locks in where all locks were only un/lockable from the driver's door. Any input from any other door would keep them in their original state. So if you're sitting shotgun and you rest your arm on the door and hit the door lock while it was unlocked, the door plunger thing would lock and the actuator would return it to it's unlocked state. I was worried this would be the case with the Tacoma but it worked out really well in the end. I'm a happy camper.

Now that I have all this done, I'm debating getting a wireless remote to link up with everything. The universal 2-door kit from Crutchfield has inputs for a wireless system. Meh I'll see if it really bugs me. After all, the whole reason why I purchased a base model regular cab Tacoma was to have a SIMPLE rig for off-road and camping duties that could still handle moving materials and customer orders around.
