So my truck with 285 70 17s (same size as 285 75 16) is my daily driver and it handles great and is quiet with ridge grapplers.
Be sure in whatever you install, get the lighter of the sidewalls for a smoother ride, that will make a huge difference.

In regards to the size you want to install, you will need to atleast level the truck (bring the front up an inch or two) to clear the fender edges.
With that size though, you will need to do a CMC as it will rub on the mount when compressed half turning rolling forward and half turning in reverse.

    Good luck

I just bought some Goodyear Ultra Terrians, Discount Tire excluisve. Went with 265/70/17, plus one over stock. 1000 miles so far, like them. Good in snow and rain, there are snowflake rated, pretty quiet for an aggressive tire.B7FC3188-D50A-4FC1-9B13-54B1DEF88B59.jpg

I went this exact same route. Love the wildpeaks. Quiet, great traction on and Offroad. Did great in snow. I bought P rated to keep my weight down. Great looking tire. I have a 2 inch lift and going up 1 size looks good in the wheel wells. If you went bigger or heavier then this tire you will lose MPG.

Yes, light... My SCS F5 with the P265/75R16 are lighter than the OEM SR5 with 245/75R16 combo!

OP @Wixo - this tire calculator https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc from the wheels and tires section will help you compare tire sizes, should you want to, further.
stock tires are either 245 or 265, depending on trim. 285s will be wider than stock and adjustments will have to be made.

another option for tires would be an LT (light truck tire) in a C rating. These will likely be a bit heavier than a P tire, but not as heavy as an LT E rated tire. C ratings are quite popular amongst the folks who like the aggressive look but don't necessarily do much, if any off roading. In particular, the BFG KO2 is very popular in amongst those that choose the C rating.

Toyos are great also can't go wrong with ko2s.

Ok, so I ended up deciding on Falken Wildpeak A/T3 in 265/75R16. They will be the 4 ply. Guy at the tire shop said they weigh just under 44lbs. Does anyone know where I can verify the weight, he got the spec from the ATD search thing they have. He said the stocks are 29in and these are going to be 31.7in and just a tad bit wider.

I am thinking about getting the spare tire also, but right now one of my stock tires hit 2/33 (cant remember if it was out of 30, 32, or 33) which the guy at the dealership told me is unsafe and should be changed immediately. So until I get my new tires I put the spare on that tires rim, but when I took it off it had 4 very noticeable grooves. Im guessing its from where the tire was held against truck, and with the heat/pressure it molded it. So whats yalls opinion? Should I buy the spare too, or get another same sized, but cheaper tire as a spare. Afterall he did quote me $760 for all 5 installed, balanced, aligned, and some nitrous or whatever gas it is they put in there to lighten it up.

Paint, scotch pad scuff, prime , three light coats. There not perfect, but will due. New tires put a couple of scratches during install.

For that price I would go ahead and get the spare, seems like a pretty good deal compared to what I spent on KO2s in the same size a while back ($192 each).

You'll be happy with the wildpeaks. I just replaced a set on my girlfriends truck that had finally worn out. Not sure how many miles were on them because they were on the truck when she bought it used, but she put at least 20k on them. They ride well with the C rating and are quiet for an AT.

I got 60K miles out of the only tire that made it from straight from the factory. I just rotate and do the maintenace every 5K miles so that got me quite a bit of life. The others are still at ~5/33 and they have roughly 45K miles on em. I think Ill get a good amount of these Wildpeaks.

    @Wixo

I forgot to mention, I think you'll also be happy with the 265s versus 285s. When I put 285s on mind it just crushed the power, ended up putting 4.88 gears in it to compensate. That fixed the power issue, but I still only get about 16mpg due to all the rolling resistance of the 285s. On 265s I was getting close to 18mpg.

Even if you decide to put a lift on later, the 265s will look good, especially if you add some aftermarket wheels with 0mm offset. Here is an example of somebody with 265s under a 3 inch lift:

Any recommendation on 33 spare tire?
Is it possible to fit 33" spare tire without modification?
