Looking for feedback on tow capacity for my 2017 tacoma. 3.5L V6 SR5. 3" lift bilstein struts, 33 1/2" tires, 1.25" wheel spacers. I've got a 20' shallow water mud boat that caps out at around 1800-2000 lbs total including trailer and gear. Trying to figure out if this truck will triple tow the boat behind either a 19' enclosed bumper pull camper or a pop up camper. Camper would be no greater than 4,000 lbs.

I've found sources online saying 3500 lb tow capacity and others saying 6800 tow capacity. Engine's all stock, I know rn she barely turns the 33 1/2" tires. I don't think she'll do it. Literally getting like 8-10 mpg just towing the boat alone.

Wanted opinions, anybody tried something like this with their Taco?

Do you have the towing package? That's where the two numbers come from.

Even if you do; towing 6,000# in a double tow when you've got a 3" lift and 33's is gonna be sketchy as frig.

6400 with the towing package, I believe.

You're going to get all sorts of responses. Some people are comfy towing at or over the limit, some aren't. I'm in the latter camp. I've towed up to a bit over 4000, and I wouldn't want to do much more for anything but a short trip. The truck handles it okay, but you feel even light loads back there. Power is fine on open roads, but once it gets curvy and steep, things start to slow down.

As someone who tows frequently with a Tacoma, I would pass on doing this. I like to tow around 75% of the rating or so max. It might do it, but it's going to be exhausting and frustrating at best.

Most of the time the limiting factor is payload, not towing capacity. That is true of almost all trucks BTW, not just Tacoma. Most trucks with the 4.0 are rated for around 6500 lbs +/- a few hundred depending. And on level ground will pull that much weight easily. But the tongue weight of anything much over 4000-4500 lbs starts to overload the suspension unless there is only a driver in the truck. Start adding passengers and other cargo to the truck and around 4000-4500 is as much as you want to pull.

But that is with factory 31" tires. Going that much bigger and you really rob the truck of power. With tires that big I'd not try to pull anything over 2000 lbs. Unless you want to regear the axles.

The 75% limit of tow weights is a great go-by for any towing vehicle... those weights give you plenty of buffer for weather, altitude, road conditions, and most important - other driver impatience. To me, towing at 100% published weights is reserved for experienced drivers, and in the best of conditions.

People who never tried to tow this load always says this. Tacoma is more capable than what people think. The tacoma doesn't suck for towing.

i'm towing a 5200lbs camper trailer with no problem at all, The Tacoma do the job pretty well!

I see you live in SLC. So anywhere you go has mountains and high possibility of cross winds.

Triple towing more than the weight of your truck would freak me out. If something starts swaying that could get out of hand in a hurry. I've seen more than enough 1 ton trucks get squirreley towing a camper and a SxS on the highways around here.

The weight the truck CAN do - but you will be working it hard to maintain speed on the highway going up any sort of a grade

The gross combined vehicle weight rating for the 2016 Tacoma is 11,360lbs. The towing capacity for my truck is 6400lbs.

I'd keep it under 5000 with the extra weight you have and ensure I had trailer brakes for anything over 2500 lbs.

I tow 5500 with 0 issues. Tows better than my 2nd did. I'm flat terrain, mountains would be different maybe.
    Trailer brakes are a must.
Tranny temps are perfect even at 95 ambient.

Here it is factual and true. Tow ratings for this truck are not real. I tow a 24 ft bay boat that weighs in with trailer , motor, fuel @ 3000lbs. Tow in 4 th gear at 60 mph all day long. Hit the 4000 lbs or more and it huffs and puffs hard! No lie! Mpg goes in the toilet. Gonna tow more...get a bigger and more powerful truck. Still like my Tacoma for what it can do.

Incorrect. Toyota uses the voluntary SAE J2897 standard and it is indeed certified. As real as it gets.
    https://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/features/no-go-for-standardized-tow-ratings.html

    Which is it ???????
    You said previously ---
"I tow a 24 ft center console bay boat with a 225ho Etec motor. Always tow with the ECT button on and does fine. Is it fast. No. Drive at 65 all day long. Gas mileage suffers but so do all vehicles towing. Just takes a little more time to get to where ur going. Taco does great at the boat ramp too!:"

    Too much.
I tow over 4k pounds. Meh, it does the job. But I would never consider tandem towing. It's not an issue of being able to tow the weight, it's a matter of stopping the weight......

Trailer brakes. I have trailer brakes on my tow that stops the load AND me if I set it as such. But I don't.

No would not recommend that, lol. But do you think 18 wheelers rely on cab brakes ??? So why should we ?

At a low speed yes. Highway speeds, no.

What I meant is the figure of speech when I said nope. Too unsafe in my opinion.
