So I bought a 1998 Tacoma with a 3.4L from a buddy of mine. Had a starting issue. Replaced the battery and alternator. Now the truck starts when it wants too. Get in it one day and it fires right up. Hop into it the next day and it acts like there is no battery in it at all. I have been tracing wires and checking fuses for the last couple days. Nothing that I do seems to work. What am I missing? Or where do I need to look next?

Check/brush corrosion on the battery wire thing cables & terminals itself. Might not be your problem though. Just an idea... I had a very similar problem.

I’m going to throw an ignition switch in there, too

Mine was doing that 2 weeks ago. Was having random start no start. Checked everything. Finally pulled starter and had it tested at Advanced. Dead. New starter $105.00. Original @ 248000

You don`t say Manual or Automatic?? In either case it might be the starter safety switches .

This is a No Crank Condition not a crank but does not start correct.

Always Good to check both Battery Cables they still might be original

then the quality of aftermarket rebuilds(starters) is hit or miss

Turn key and no crank? Check the starter contacts. Please don't trade your oem starter in for a shizzy reman, just rebuild the contacts. It's easy, cheaper, and you keep the OEM Denso quality starter which is huge, even Denso remans can suck

Manual Trans. No start, no crank. Replaced both + and - cables. Issue is still present. Hit and miss though.

Clutch switch going out or bad connection possibly. Dome have a rubber pad that the switch hits. Deteriorates or just falls off?

Are you getting the Clutch pushed far enough in each time??

When the key is turned to start nothing not even a clicking solenoid ??

    Poor connections

Burnt or loose connection at the starter solenoid ?

When you pulled the starter relay where any of the blades arced or loose??

Any burn marks on the female side ??
