... it wasn't long before we arrived at our destination, technically known as: some spot along the road. We pulled off as far as we could - careful to stay within the grading berms - and prepped ourselves for the journey ahead. Lunches were made, water bottles filled. And then, we set off across the desert. Truth be told, it didn't look that far to the other side.

Check out the full story and photos in part 3 of Hiking Death Valley. It covers two days for your viewing pleasure:

    Ok.

I’m planning on building a small DIY solar/roof top pressurized shower to mount on my shell rack for this year.

    Similar to this -

    https://www.rei.com/blog/camp/diy-car-top-solar-camp-shower

Been doing my research and I have it all designed and planned out. Except for one thing...

What to actually build it out of.. PVC or ABS. I like the idea of ABS since it’s already black and I wouldn’t have to paint it since I’m lazy. Plus I image an all black pipe would absorb more solar energy than a painted white one.

But all the ABS I’ve been lookin at is DWV pipe so it has no pressure rating.

I definitely wanna be able to pressurize it instead relying on gravity.

I was also looking at the option of using a small electric pump to move the water out of the tank instead of air pressure.

It’s hard I find accurate info on what kinda pressure ABS can actually handle.

Who’s built one of these before and what did you end up using?

    Just the basics
I built one last year. Used it on top of my FWC last spring, summer, and fall. It worked ok and I'm happy I made it. Took some trial and error. Ended up buying more pieces and joining them together because on my first attempt I had to cut part of the pipe off and redo it. That REI video is actually pretty spot on for what you need to do. One addition could be a pressure relief valve. I put mine on the part which can be removed for filling the tube. Most of the sources I referenced for my build were done out of either black ABS or DWV pipe from what I recall. Without going to Lowes and checking I'm pretty sure that's what I used. I ended up painting my shower tube flat black to cover the lettering which is printed on the pipe.

I’ve been using a Coleman solar bag thingy and it gets warm enough to get a quick rinse in after a long day of fishing. I just hate having to set it up and take it down. Looking for a permanent solution to stay up on the shell and not break the bank.

90% of the ones I’ve see seem to be made of DWV cellcore ABS

Most of my inspiration and design come from this one

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dG2HK9JsAjw

Seems to be running 30psi with no issue.

How much were you running in yours ?

    Right.

Any thoughts about the pressure rating?

It depends on what type of ABS pipe it is. ABS 1208 is only rated for 15 psi, where as ABS 1316 is rated for almost 700 PSI !!!!

Oh man, was this going to be fun. A trip like no other (so far). A trip with a twist. A trip that was actually two. Let me explain.

For a while now, Anza Borrego Desert State Park in California has been on my list of places to explore. Like Death Valley - which we've visited quite a bit and recently hiked for three days - it's a great place to visit during the winter because temperatures in the summer can get rather unbearable - so much so that certain roads in the park are closed from mid-June to September. The problem is that the drive to-and-from Anza Borrego is a bit too long to make our normal 6-day jaunts worthwhile.

So you can imagine my excitement when I realized that there was an opportunity to nearly double the length of the trip and cut the driving in half, all at the same time!

To find out how, read the first chapter and see photos of my first experience in Anza-Borrego, check out:

Saw that out there in Coyote Canyon as well last weekend. Pretty cool vehicle. Got a good laugh out of the "Expedition RV" stenciled on the side.

...The sandy washes were fun to drive in and we made reasonably good time except for me stopping every couple minutes to take pictures. But really, how could anyone resist - the sun was out and the weather was a far cry better than the snow we'd left in Washington!
