I recently bought my first Tacoma (2013 Double Cab PreRunner)! I've searched all over and have found pieces of helpful information regarding installing a backup camera for my truck, but haven't figured out exactly what I need to do in order to get my OEM backup camera to work.

Here's where I am and what I know:
    1. My truck is "pre-wired" for the backup camera. (I realize pre-wired doesn't mean I have a connection from there to the head unit).
    2. I purchased and connected an new OEM camera to the connection at the tailgate.
    3. There are 4 wires leaving the harness underneath the passenger tailgate and these 4 wires run to the front of my truck.
    4. I have a 6" Factory Touchscreen Head Unit (non-entune).
    5. I've pulled the Head Unit and there is nothing plugged into the R17 connection (I understand this is where the video feed should be connected).
    6. I checked under my fuse panel and there is a 4 wire connection that I believe (from my research - see picture) is the connection from the camera at the tailgate.
    7. I understand I must get those 4 wires and a backup signal to my head unit.
    Questions:
If those 4 wires are run to the factory connector by the fuse panel (and those wires continue on), where do they go right now beyond that connection if they aren't going all the way to my head unit? I've seen harnesses sold online that connect there and go to the head unit, but come with an aftermarket camera. Does anyone have any advice to help me get this camera working? I greatly appreciate your help. I'm tempted to rig something up, but how does Toyota hook these up in trucks that have the camera installed at the time of sale? I'm mostly confused on where these 4 wires are terminating in my truck.

Here are some pictures that will give you an idea of what I have:

Figured it out on my own and thought I'd post it incase anyone else is trying to do the same thing. The cable runs from the fuse panel up through the driver's side A frame to the front top center of the windshield (you can access it by removing the one screw in the rear sunglasses holder and then removing the fixture). I've decided that I'm going to either buy my own connector and make my own harness to connect at the fuse panel or buy the pre-made one from camera source (https://camera-source.com/2013-tacoma-mirror-to-radio-camera-conversion.html). Hope this helps someone!

Did you buy the harness or make your own? If the R17 male connector could be found couldn't you just tap into the mirror wire connectors and then have it displayed in both the mirror and the head unit?

I thought about making my own, but ended up buying a harness from Camera Source through eBay. For future reference, where did you find the R17 connector? If you split the wires at the 4 pin connector behind the fuse panel, you could display both for sure. There are people on here that have done it. I'll try to find them.

I didn't have a display in my rearview to start with...only wires run all the way. So, I decided to just make it display on the head unit by taking the complete signal (didn't split it...just disconnected the 4 pin connector at the fuse panel and connected to a harness that runs directly to a R17).

I had entune plus but replaced it. Anyone know how to get the camera to work with aftermarket HU? (sorry to jack your thread)

That would depend on what aftermarket head unit you have. Maybe contact the manufacturer for the info

for those interested, i just put in a camera from camera source on my 2013 tacoma, and they connect theirs (plug and play harness) to a wire behind the drivers side A panel (behind the grab bar) which then runs to the back of the factory radio. their customer service was very helpful and they were able to point me in the right direction. My truck was "pre-wired" which also only meant that there was a factory harness running from the back to the front. So i added a camera harness to the back, and then a separate harness to the radio as described above.

FYI, this does not fit 14 head units in 13 trucks.

mine is for sale $50 shipped, managed to break the "2" pin that's pre-installed, readily available at parts stores or just shove the wire in.

My 2013 reg. cab 4X4's camera is now working. Not as nice, clear, colored, & marked as my buddy's 2019 Ram 1500's camera, but way better than the wife's 2010 Rav4 camera that shows thru the rear view mirror. I bought a $40 camera from ebay, & a wiring harness, like the camera source harness, from ebay for $45 & my shade tree mechanic friend installed it today, took him appx. 2 hr. Finally all is good

Does yours show up on the factory entire head unit? also will the harness work for a 2014 reg cab?
