Edited to add context and a question:

Best paper map of the state?

Planning a trip from Chicago to New Mexico in August on a tight schedule and was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on doing Hayden’s pass and engineers pass (lake city to Silverton) in one day.

Also, are tire chains a year round requirement on higher passes? Or not.

    Thanks in advance.

The traffic on Engineer Pass in August could easily take over 3 hours.

I hear that, thinking of heading out early and expecting the worst. If I’m ahead of schedule that’s fine, if I’m on schedule that’s fine.

    Thanks for the reply

Chains not for the trails, just the area in general.

August 7th or 8th is my target date to be on or over engineers then heading south the New Mexico.

If it's open by then... I read they aren't investing any money into opening the trails this year after the winter we had. None of them may be open this year.

Yep, those Cities/ counties covering the Alpine Loop/ San Juan triangle draw most of their revenue from visitors.

All the highway avalanche mitigation and plowing was CDOT..state budget. The passes are county roads and will get open, maybe a little later than usual.

I hope so. That where I do all my summer riding, camping, offroading, etc. It's one of the biggest reasons I moved here.

They have to do something especially after losing so much revenue due to the fires last year.

So if they are open still not a good idea to try do both in a day due to traffic on engineers pass. Any recommendations for truck camping/sleeping in my truck in between the two?

I would take the south route via South Fork & Creede (Which I think is way under rated town). There is plenty of camping on Lake City side of the alpine loop

Thanks for the recommendation. I can take my time between Villa grove and Lake city so might go this route or may go north via salida. Options are good.

Update, trip is pretty close, obviously there are still a bunch of closures in the area and some roads may not open this year for one reason or the other. But a question for the locals, what paper map do you guys recommend for Colorado? I have the trail books but need a real map of the whole state I can study and use if needs be.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for but I know most use this for general and Country road stuff.
