This is probably the cheapest lathe for the size you are going to need.

I was bummed to find that HF discontinued their 40” model. I have an ok sized shop space but I’ll hardly ever use a lathe. Thinking about getting one of the smaller ones and just scarfing the top profiled sections onto the square posts.

I made this Hutch for the wife a few years back. Seems my Whiskey collection has taken it over now.

For what you want to do, it seems more cost effective to just purchase new ones. How many do you need? Are you replacing some of the posts or all? Are they damaged?

Thank you. Best I remember I used an alcohol based dye to bring out the grain in the Curly Maple. Then I rubbed 3-4 coats of urethane on it.

It certainly might be more cost effective to buy new ones. That’s what I’m still trying to figure out. A neighbor got some for his porch and spent, iirc, something like $200 each and they’re just production style. They’re ok posts, but they just don’t go well with the house imo. So I imagine getting custom ones to match (x 4 on the porch and 2 more at the bottom of the stairs will be more than the lathe, tools + materials.

The only existing post is the column pictured. It is damaged as you can see. I will fill the damage. The others were removed at some point and replaced with some crappy Doug fir 2x4s.

I cant remember. I didn't use any plans. I just sorta built it from scratch. I'll try and measure it this evening.

Here's a nice set for just over $100

    https://www.vintagewoodworks.com/trhepopo.html

Home Depot has them for less than $100.

    https://www.homedepot.com/p/3-1-4-in-x-3-1-4-in-x-8-ft-Porch-Column-709718/202090420

Good luck with whatever route you choose.

Thanks. Those are nice, but the 6” ones, which are what I need, are over $200. So, by the time they’re shipped, I’ll be over $1k. And I don’t get to justify to my wife why I need more tools, even if it won’t be too often that I use it. Who knows maybe I’ll really like turning...

Try a less "formal" font next time. Easier to "hide" the mistakes. Or, find a trophy place, bring in the piece you want done and have them do it.

The lady wanted to match the wedding invite so I don't have font choice. I have a CNC that I need to get setup and use it instead
