So where did you guys mount your relays??

I ziptied mine up to the other wire loom coming from the 4WD ECU as pictured. Not super happy with that location though because the back of the glove box actually hits the relay as it opens and closes. Theres not a ton of slack in the wires to get it somewhere else though obviously..

Mines just zip tied to the side of the support where yours is. It's never been a problem and the glove box doesn't hit it.

Just finished all the wiring and tested it and the locker engaged just like it was supposed to. Thought I was good to go but now it won't disengage. Any ideas?

Just to be sure, you're not on pavement and you are turning the wheel back and forth right? Like big sweeping half circles?

Try accelerating a bit and then letting off while still doing gradual turns back and forth. Might reduce some of the load on the locker and let it release. Same principal as the transfer case.

Other than that, check all of your connections to the relay (a few of mine were loose - had to take pliers and crimp down the piece that slides onto the relay prongs). And check you got the correct wires.. :notsure:

I'll give that a try. And the wires shouldn't be the issue if I'm thinking of this right. If there is no power to the relay (press locker button to turn it off), the locker should automatically want to disengage right? In other words even if I had a bad connection it should still try to disengage right?

I'm not certain, but I dont think that is correct. If you shut the truck off in 4Lo with the locker engaged, I think it stays engaged even without power.

The 2nd gen is a mechanical actuator on top of the diff. Unlike the 3rd gens

Just did this mod... everything worked perfect. The relay, directions... awesome to not be handcuffed with 4LO anymore when I want the rear end locked.

    Thanks JSI!!

For info... 2006 TRD Tacoma, all the wire colors matched perfectly.

So I just picked up a 2007 Tacoma and looking to do this mod. After reading all 26 pages its strate forward except none of the Amazon links to the relay work. I searched on amazon and was only able to find a DPDT 12v DC relay in a 30 amp. Part # QIANJI JQX-12F. It’s an 8 pin just like all the others pictured and described but in a 30 amp. All the posts say to use a 5 or 10 amp relay. Is there any harm in running a bigger relay?

Thanks in advance for the help.

The relay you list above should work, more amps isn't a problem. In this application it's like the difference between killing an ant with a 10 pound hammer vs a 20 pound hammer. Both are overkill and will get the job done equally well. I will warn you that the instructions are written for a relay like this one:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KCJGY4T/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_PpIRCbXRH6J3J

But the video shows installing the diode in a relay like the one you've found. "My" relay has an LED which is helpful for trouble shooting and it makes a big difference which way the diode is installed. If you do it wrong there will be blown fuses. :(

I'd like to do an update, but I'm building a new house and practically everything I own is in a storage bin, so more videos will have to wait.

    The update is done, finally

Just to be sure, these are what I follow if I made it myself and used the relay that you suggested (with LED)?

Also, will the ends from the diode making contact with any wire in the relay itself cause any issues? After I soldered it in I noticed that it may be leaning against some of the wires going to #5 and #6.

    Thank you for any help!

Glad you asked. There are a number of ways to go wrong with this. The LED relay cares which way the diode goes in and the video is for the non-LED relay. (which doesn't care which way the diode is installed. ) If you look closely at the diode it will have a white band at one end.
    diode.jpg

That end of the diode MUST go to pin 8 on the relay. The other way won't work and may even blow fuses. The extra length of wire at each end of the diode needs to cut off close. If not they may short the other pins and the will cause problems. If you follow these instructions you will follow this connection pattern.
    1. Green / Black Stripe
    2. Violet (one end of your "Y" cable)
    3. Violet (the other end of your "Y" cable) ((the third end of your "Y" cable is connected to the violet wire using the vampire tap))
    4. Pink
    5. Green
    6. Blue
    7. Ground (if you are using a diode equipped relay it's important that 7 and 8 are connected correctly. If you do it backwards fuse ig1 no.2 will blow.)
    8. Red / Black Stripe
    Hope this helps
